PARK CITY - Freshman Dominic Demschar won his first career race and four Utah skiers finished in the top 10 as the Utes competed in an RMISA giant slalom qualifier race on Thursday.
Demschar, who is in his first season with the Utes, is from Park City and competed for Australia at the 2014 Olympics. His second run was the fastest of the day. Junior Andy Trow finished third for his third career podium finish. Sophomore Joergen Brath crossed the line sixth while freshman Endre Bjertness was seventh in his first career race for Utah. Tim Hribar finished 29th for the Utes.
"Once again, I could not be more proud of how our athletes performed," Utah head alpine coach Jaka Korencan said. "I couldn't ask for a better start to the season after battling injuries all during the fall. Congratulations to Dominic winning his first collegiate race as a Ute with an excellent performance, and congratulations to Andy, Joergen and Endre on their excellent NCAA qualification results. The team effort today was tremendous, and once again, this is a great inspiration for the whole team for the Utah Invitational."
The RMISA qualifier races do not count towards any team scoring, but are used as an extra opportunity for skiers to earn qualification points for the NCAA Championships at the end of the season.
The Utah Invitational begins on Friday, Jan. 9, beginning with the women's giant slalom with a 9:30 a.m. start. The nordic races will be held on the Olympic course at Soldier Hollow, while the alpine races are on Payday at Park City Mountain Resort. The full schedule is below.
