PROVO, Utah--
The No. 6 Utah gymnastics team fired off its best season-opening score since 2005 and blasted rival Brigham Young 196.900-196.350 in the Deseret Duel before 2,527 fans in the Marriott Center.
Tory Wilson led a Utah victory sweep, winning the all-around (39.450) and floor (9.90), and tying for first on vault with Georgia Dabritz (9.925). Dabritz also won bars with a 9.90 and sophomore Baely Rowe picked up her first career win with a 9.90 on beam.
Speaking of the beam, the Utes lived up to their preseason assurances that they had improved on the event that has cost them dearly in the last two years.
"Beam spoke for itself tonight," said co-head coach Greg Marsden of the 49.200 effort. "For the last two to three years, it has been tough event for us and cost us moving into the Super Six for the past two. We're better this year because our returning people have improved and we're better because of recruiting."
Wilson and Kailah Delaney led off Utah's final event of the night with back-to-back 9.80s on the beam that allowed Rowe to cut loose and have fun in a career-high 9.90 effort. Freshmen Kari Lee (9.85) and Maddy Stover (9.775) came up big in their Ute beam debuts and senior Corrie Lothrop punctuated the set with a 9.85 as the anchor.
Utah got off to a fast start, scoring a 49.175 behind Dabritz' 9.90 and Kassandra Lopez' 9.875 on the bars. For Lopez, it marked her return to action after missing all of last season with an Achilles tear. After the first rotation, Utah led 49.175-48.700, a lead that would soon widen.
Dabritz made it two-for-two on the next event, tying Wilson for first on vault with a 9.925. Lee scored a 9.85 in her very first college routine--a score matched by Kailah Delaney. Utah's 49.30 would stand as its best score of the night and the Utes were up 98.475-96.900 over the Cougars at the midway point.
Utah's lead would balloon to three-plus points on the next event. While the Utes were scoring a 49.225 on the floor, BYU had three falls on beam for a 47.525. Wilson showed off her big double layout first pass and scored a 9.90 to lead the Utes, who also got a 9.875 from both Dabritz and Rowe. It was the first floor routine of the sophomore Rowe's Ute career.
The meet was firmly in hand by the time the Utes went to the beam, but they didn't let up. "It wasn't unexpected," said Lopez of their beam and final score." Added Dabritz, "It was definitely a promising start."
Despite the huge opening meet score, Marsden saw room for improvement. "It was a perfect opening meet from a coach's perspective. We had a lot of good things, but there were lots of areas where we've been doing better in the gym and can improve for our next meet. We had some first-meet jitters, but we didn't give away anything big and it was a great opening meet on the road."
Utah entertains Boise State, Southern Utah and UC Davis next Friday in its home opener. The meet starts at 7 p.m. in the Huntsman Center.
