LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Utah volleyball team wrapped up a two-match road swing with a 3-1 (13-25, 22-25, 20-25) loss to the No. 2-ranked USC Trojans Sunday afternoon at the Galen Center.
Freshman Berkeley Oblad recorded a team-high 10 kills and tallied a career-high .600 hitting percentage in the match, but it was not enough and the Utes fell to 9-15 overall, 3-11 in the Pac-12), while the Trojans pushed its overall record to 25-1 and 13-1 in Pac-12 play.
After hitting just .147 in a 25-13 loss in set one, the Utes came back to hit .342 in the second frame, but USC's Samantha Brico came away with 11 of her match-high 21 kills and the Trojans slipped past Utah in the second frame, 25-22, to take a 2-0 lead.
Utah would keep it close in the third set as well, but a .152 hitting percentage and five service errors from the Utes led to USC's 25-20 third-set victory and a 3-0 sweep for the Trojans.
Utah finished the match hitting .219 as a team, but USC registered a .364 attack percentage and five service aces on the day. The Trojans collected 10 more kills 48-38) and seven more digs (49-42), but the two squads did manage to tie each other with 5.0 total team blocks.
Oblad was the only Ute to record 10 or more kills, but sophomore Adora Anae - who led the team with 13 digs - and freshman Megan Shughrou (10 digs) posted double-figure dig efforts for Utah. Redshirt freshman Jessie Jorgensen posted a team-high 21 assists and senior Kendall Cygan followed with 14 assists in the match.
Utah returns home the Huntsman Center next weekend to host both Arizona squads, facing the Arizona Wildcats on Thursday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. and then closing out the weekend against the Arizona State Sun Devils on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m.
