UTAH vs. IPFW POST GAME QUOTES
Utah 96, IPFW 79
Utah Head Coach Larry Krystkowiak
On the slow start...
That's a good team, it's one of those teams when you're working on the schedule that's very dangerous. It's one of those games no disrespect, maybe name recognition isn't off the charts, but people in basketball circles they're right in the middle of the pack as far as RPI goes and I wouldn't be surprised if they win their league. They're playing with a lot of confidence, that's a team coming in here they're 7-2 but we've got to be better defensively. 0 had a terrific game, 18 in the first half. They burned us from the 3pt line, our defense has to get significantly better if we want to accomplish our team goals. It's been a consistent thread with these losses, we have to take a good look at what we're doing. We knew that they were going to shoot them and we still gave up 13 of them.
On "hangover" from BYU game...
I believe so, again no disrespect to IPFW at all, I don't think it matters who you play after BYU. There's got to be a certain percentage of your brain that's still trying to recover from it all. I know there's a lot of enthusiasm and talk and different things, it's always going to be a challenge following that game because it's at such a high level. I think second half we got a lot of people's attention, we had a bunch of mental breakdowns. That team played a lot harder than us in the 1st half, they out rebounded us, they had more points in transition, more second chance points, just about every hustle stat they won coming into our building. It was pretty easy to challenge our guys to have more pride in that and really button it down. Obviously the post threat that Jakob provided for us and Lorenzo getting some points in transition kind of opened the game up. That's a team that's a little tired that played on Thursday night at Cal Poly. They came in here and played 36 hours later, it looked like maybe a combination of us having a little more focus and enthusiasm and them running out of gas a little bit.
On Jakob's passing...
"He's a point center. He's a great passer and has got a terrific set of hands on him. I thought he did a nice job of slowing down and making the right play. You put him in some of those elbow sets and he's got some size so he can see over some people. He's not afraid to pass and we have to make sure everyone on the team feels that way and get good shot's.
Sophomore Forward Kyle Kuzma
On post game involvement...
We got the ball in the paint, that's the first reason I'd say. Then we got stops on the defensive end, we guarded the 3pt line a little better than in the first half.
On adjustment to being an inside out team...
Not really, it's no secret that we were a better 3pt shooting team last year. I feel like we just have some guys in slump shooting and that just has to do with confidence. Once they get back they can carry us some games, I wouldn't say that we carry them, it's just as a collective group we try to fight through stuff.
Senior Forward Jordan Loveridge
On three point defense...
I'm not sure, when you think about the new rules, a lot of guys including myself are worried about getting fouls putting hands on guys. You don't always think to get up, you're thinking guys are going to drive and try to get you in foul trouble. So I think that's a big thing, it's a mindset type thing, we just have to stop thinking about that and start getting out to shooters.
On improvement on own three point shooting...
I just try to work in the offseason. It's not anything other than getting reps, getting a lot of shots up. Confidence is a big thing, my teammates give me a lot of confidence and so do the coaches and fans, it's just everyone. When you see a couple go in, it just gets flowing from there. It's also easy when you have great bigs that are going to be unselfish and kick it out when they are double teamed, so it makes it easy to get ready for shots, our shots are going to come.

On Joe Reed picking up back to back fouls defensively…
It changed the game. We need to gel. We already had Brent (Calhoun) with four fouls as well in that stretch and that was an offensively rebound on the free throw. It is inexcusable. Then you pick up your fourth on that play right there. That was a bad scenario. Then we went to our zone. Our zone will be good for us in our league but we have been working on our newcomers who aren't as quite as good. It is a little more complicated. It takes a little time with eight newcomers to get every body involved. We gave that a little bit of a look but we had to go small to manage that and it's tough to rebound that. We're not quite there, those were the first possessions of zone that we've played, just trying to protect some guys who were in foul trouble. But you're right, that four minute stretch and then what happens is we came down on the other end and we talk all the time, there is no such thing as a 16 point play. We started getting into one on one, not playing our style of basketball. We didn't swing the ball side to side. We made some plays in that stretch like after they made a a little bit of a run but it still wasn't our basketball. About a four minute stretch. I called the timeout, we came back and we started to swing the ball. You are going to have a hard time winning games when you only shoot four free throws. Going on the road is always difficult but we have to make sure we are more aggressive. That should never happen to our team. When they shoot 23 and we shoot four, I'm pretty mad on us that we need to be more aggressive on that stand point. 62% for them, Poeltl is a pretty good player, he's pretty good and puts you in some tough spots.
Playing well in the first 20 minutes…
I don't know the play book but we tied it back up,41-44. There was about 16 minutes left in the game. I agree, for 24 minutes, we played them dead even. We really need to subtract that four minute stretch where it got away. I'm proud of these guys with their resilience on this road trip. The travel is no joke. You have probably heard Coach Walton talk about warriors on the air. They are talking about the NBA teams when they travel, the time zones and they go on a seven game road stretch. They are happy to come out of there 5-2. Trevone Green stands up and says, "Hey, I want nothing to do with that. We are going 7-0." I think our group has that mentality but when you face off against a top-25 team like Utah, you don't always get that way. There is a point we have to play a better game than we did today to get a win. But I am really proud of this road trip, getting that win two nights ago against Cal-Poly was a big win. The fact that we came out 36 hours later, not as much prep as you'd like, going into altitude. This group has done a really good job. We've gone to Denver, won the last two years there. We have come here and we manage. Our group is just tougher than that. I am proud of that part of it. But there is a lesson in today as well. That four minute stretch where we didn't play together as a team offensively and went to some one on one. We didn't take care of some details on the defensive end. That's a learning curve. We can't do that. There is going to be times this year in league play where we are going to be down, 8, 9, 10 a dozen points and we are going to fight back.
