SALT LAKE CITY - Utah senior Delon Wright was named the 2015 recipient of the Bob Cousy Award for the nation's top point guard this evening. He is the first Pac-12 player to win the award, which has been handed out every season since 2003-04.
Wright follows 2014 NCAA Tournament MOP Shabazz Napier and 2013 Naismith Award winner and current member of the Utah Jazz Trey Burke as winners of the Cousy Award.
Wright was nominated along with AP Third Team All-American and West Coast Conference Player of the Year Kevin Pangos of Gonzaga, AP Honorable Mention All-American and 2015 NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player Tyus Jones of Duke and AP Honorable Mention All-Americans Fred VanVleet of Wichita State and T.J. McConnell of Arizona.
Wright has won a number of accolades this season including earning a spot on the John R. Wooden All-American Team, being named a Sporting News All-American, as well as an AP, USBWA and NABC Second Team All-American. He also captured the USBWA District VIII Player of the Year, made First Team All-Pac-12 and the conference's All-Defensive Team.
Wright led the Utes to the Sweet 16 where they fell to eventual national champion Duke. Utah also achieved its best season since joining the Pac-12, going 26-9, 13-5 in conference play.
Wright finished third all-time at Utah in steals despite only playing two seasons. He ranked second in the Pac-12 in assist-to-turnover ratio (26th nationally), third in steals (23rd nationally) and sixth in free-throw percentage. The senior also finished third in the league in assists and 10th in scoring. Wright finished his career with 1,022 points, 397 rebounds, 352 assists, 155 steals and 77 blocks.
