ABOUT UTAH
Utah wrapped up a four-match road swing, going 1-1 against both Washington schools this past weekend. The Utes fell to No. 7 Washington on Friday, but rebounded to defeat No. 13-ranked Washington State in five sets on Sunday.
Â
Junior
Carly Trueman led the Utes with 12 kills against the Huskies, while junior
Adora Anae added 11 kills and 10 digs for the squad's only double-double. Utah tallied more kills (39-37), more digs (43-42) and more assists (38-33) than Washington, but the Huskies countered with nine service aces (to Utah's one) and 6.0 total team blocks (Utah had 3.0).
Â
Anae had posted just six kills through the first three sets against the Cougars on Sunday, but then managed to find her groove on the way to finishing with a team-high 18 kills. She added 10 digs for her 13th double-double of the season. Trueman added 12 kills and has now posted double-digit kill efforts in three straight matches. Sophomore
Jessie Openshaw matched season-high with 32 assists and posted 12 digs for her first double-double of the season. Sophomore
Berkeley Oblad led the way at the net with seven total blocks, while sophomore
Emma Kirst followed with six total blocks on the day. Kirst did manage to notch a new career-high with two solo blocks in the victory.
Â
WINNING ON THE ROAD
Utah registered its second-best record through the team's first eight road matches of the season, going 7-1 overall. Utah's only loss was a defeat to No. 7-ranked Washington. Utah went 8-0 back in 1997 - the program's only perfect record through the first eight road matches.
Â
Utah's seven road victories already matches 2013's seven-win mark. The Utes will look to register another road win next weekend when the team travels to Los Angeles to face UCLA and USC. The last time a Utah team had at least eight road wins came back in 2010 (8-5).
Â
KNOCKING DOWN TOP-25 RANKED TEAMS
Utah moved to 4-3 overall on the season against teams ranked in the AVCA Top-25 Poll. More impressively, all four of those wins have come on the road. Utah's road wins over top-ranked teams include at #9 BYU (Sept. 15), at #16 Colorado (Sept. 21), at #7 Stanford (Oct. 9) and at #13 Washington State (Oct. 16).
Â
The Utes are just two wins away from tying the school's best mark for victories against top-25 ranked teams. Utah registered six wins against top-25 foes back in 2014.
Â
UTES MOVE UP IN AVCA TOP-25 POLL
Utah made its second straight appearance (third overall) in the AVCA Top-25, moving up one spot to No. 20 following a win over then No. 13 Washington State and a defeat to No. 7 Washington. Utah received 379 total votes, 51 votes shy of No. 19 Ohio State, and 51 votes more than No. 22 Kentucky.
Â
Utah made its season debut in the AVCA poll at No. 25 back on Sept. 26. Along with receiving votes in the poll, Utah has now been mentioned in five straight polls dating back to Sept. 19.
Â
RPI TALK
In just three weeks of RPI rankings, the Utes have managed to move up 11 spots since debuting at No. 27 back on Oct. 3. Utah came in at No. 16 in the RPI standings on Monday, moving up five spots from last week's No. 21 ranking.
Â
Utah is currently 4-3 overall against teams ranked 1-25 in the RPI, 1-0 against team ranked 26-50, 2-1 against teams ranked 51-100, 4-1 against teams ranked 101-150 and 3-0 against teams ranked 150 or more.
Â
The Utes already have four wins over teams ranked in the top-25 RPI rankings. The last time a Utah team went to the NCAA Tournament, back in 2014, the squad had registered just five wins overall against teams ranked 1-25. The Utes finished that season ranked No. 37 in the final RPI standings.
Â
The Pac-12 is well represented with nine teams ranked inside the top-35 RPI standings. Along with Utah at No. 16, the Pac-12 has Washington (7), Stanford (11), UCLA (14), Washington State (21), USC (24), Oregon (25), Arizona (31) and Colorado (35) among the top-50. Rounding out the Pac-12 teams is Oregon State (98), Arizona State (118) and California (122).
