Raelon Singleton had a career game with 116 receiving yards and three touchdowns and Joe Williams had his fourth-straight 100-yard game since returning, rushing for 181 net yards and two touchdowns against an ASU defense that came into the game leading the Pac-12 in rushing defense at 116.0 yards per game.
Marcus Williams returned from a two-game injury absence in fine fashion, grabbing an interception—his fourth of the season—in the Sun Devils' end zone on the opening drive. Utah was unable to take advantage of the defensive effort, turning the ball over on its first two drives.
Arizona State (5-5, 2-5 Pac-12) got on the board first on a field goal from kicker Zane Gonzales for a 3-0 lead in the opening period. The Sun Devils continued their offensive push, taking a 10-0 lead after Kalen Ballage exploded for a 62-yard run. Another field goal made it 13-0 by the end the first quarter.
Utah came out firing in the second quarter, with Troy Williams connecting on a 64-yard pass to Singleton to narrow the gap to 13-7. The Utes took their first lead of the game on their next offensive possession, going up 14-13 on freshman Siaosi Wilson's diving catch on a 27-yard throw by Troy Williams.
Arizona State regained the lead, 20-14, with 3:36 to play in the first half, but Troy Williams again connected with a wide-open Singleton in the end zone and Utah took a 21-20 edge into the break.
The Utes and Joe Williams came out of the break firing. Williams broke free for an 82-yard touchdown run on Utah's first drive of the second half to give Utah a 28-20 lead. The Sun Devils found the end zone with 2:20 to play in the third quarter, but failed on a two-point conversion to leave the Utes a 28-26 lead. .
Utah pulled away in the fourth quarter when Singleton caught his third touchdown pass of the game (most by a Ute receiver since Brent Casteel had three TD catches against UNLV in 2006) and put the game on ice on a pick-six by safety Chase Hansen. Joe Williams completed the scoring a few minutes later on a 40-yard TD dash.
Utah has two games remaining in the regular season and controls its destiny. Should the Utes win out against Oregon (Nov. 19 in Salt Lake City) and Colorado (in Boulder, Nov. 26), they would win the tie-breaker for the South Division title over USC and Colorado.
