Utah had just regained the lead and the momentum prior to Carrington's grab over the outstretched arms of Brian Allen. With 2:18 remaining and the Utes trailing 24-21, Troy Williams fired a 30-yard touchdown pass to Evan Moeai to give the Utes a 28-24 lead. The fourth lead change of the fourth quarter would not hold up, however, and Utah dropped to 8-3 overall and 5-3 in the Pac-12 with one regular season game remaining at Colorado next Saturday.
After scoring on their first possession of the game on a 24-yard run by Cory Butler-Byrd, the Utes couldn't maintain the pace—finding themselves locked in a seesaw battle with the underdog Ducks. Not until early in the third quarter, when a 12-yard touchdown run by Joe Williams gave Utah its largest lead of the day (14-3) did Utah get back on the board.
The lead didn't hold up as Oregon scored two unanswered touchdowns to take a 17-14 lead before Chase Hansen recovered a botched punt return in the end zone for a touchdown to put Utah back on top 21-14. With 6:41 remaining, Oregon regained the lead on a 1-yard run by Herbert, setting the stage for Troy Williams' go ahead throw to Moeai.
The last-second ruling marred yet another Senior Day for the Utes, who also saw their division title hopes dashed in 2011 and 2014 in their regular-season home finale. The loss overshadowed another 100-yard rushing game by senior Joe Williams—his fifth-straight since coming out of a one-month retirement. Williams, who netted 149 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries to bring his season total to 1,088 rushing yards.
Playing in his last game in Rice-Eccles Stadium, senior defensive end Hunter Dimick eclipsed the school sack record—collecting two sacks to bring his career total to 29.0. Dimick, who has a team-leading 14 sacks this season—had three total tackles and a pass breakup.
Another senior who exited with a school record was kicker Andy Phillips, whose four PATs made him the first player in Utah history to score 400 points in his career (he has 403 career points).
Sophomore Cody Barton led Utah with a career-high 20 total tackles (10 solo) for a Utah defense that struggled to reign in the Ducks, allowing them 575 yards of total offense.
