SALT LAKE CITY—An uncharacteristically poor night sent the Ute gymnastics team tumbling to ninth place at the NCAA Championships last April, but the nation's coaches don't see that happening again, forecasting Utah's return to the Super Six in the 2017 preseason poll. Utah received 2,246 total points and two first-place votes while ranking sixth behind defending national champion Oklahoma, LSU, Alabama, UCLA and Florida.
Â
Utah—just two years removed from its 2015 NCAA runner-up finish—is the only team in the preseason Super Six who did not make it a year ago.
Â
"We have a young but extremely talented team," said Utah co-head coach
Tom Farden. "The expectations for our team every season are to qualify into the Super Six and challenge for a national championship. This year is no different and we are pleased to see that the other coaches see us in that same light."
Â
The Utes return four All-Americans, among them sophomore
Kari Lee, who missed most of last of last season with a torn Achilles. Lone senior
Baely Rowe, and sophomores
Sabrina Schwab and
Maddy Stover are the others.
Â
Utah's highly-touted freshman class is also reflected in the rankings.
MyKayla Skinner, a World Cup all-around champion and alternate to the 2016 USA Gymnastics team, joins Junior Olympic national champions
Missy Reinstadtler and
Kim Tessen on the roster.
Â
The Utes have seven preseason top-25 teams on their schedule and open the season against No. 7 Michigan in Salt Lake City on Jan. 7. Other top-25 matchups on the home schedule include No. 14 Denver and No. 15 Boise State on Jan. 20; 10 California on Feb. 4, No. 4 UCLA on Feb. 18 and No. 11 Stanford on Mar. 3. Utah's highest-ranked road opponent is No. 9 Georgia on Mar. 11.
Â
More than 8,500 season tickets have already been purchased for the 2017 season—a school record. With the lower bowl all but sold out, reserved season tickets are being offered in the upper deck of the 15,000-seat Huntsman Center for the first time and the first five rows have already sold out.
