Utes prepare for another daunting slate
2017 Schedule
SALT LAKE CITY - Utah Softball has announced its schedule for the upcoming 2017 season. The Utes will play 53 games, 30 of which will be against teams that qualified for last season's NCAA Tournament.
Utah will take part in five tournaments and host 15 contests, including four Pac-12 series, at Dumke Family Softball Stadium. The Utes will play 18 games, six Pac-12 series, on the Pac-12 Networks.
"I can hardly wait for February," head coach Amy Hogue said. "We will be challenged each and every weekend of the season and hope to build upon the things this team was able to accomplish last year."
The Utes will begin the 2016 season at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz. They will face UC Riverside, San Jose State, Indiana, UTEP and UT-Arlington
Utah also heads to Long Beach, Calif., Feb. 17-19 to participate in the Louisville Slugger Invitational where it will play host LBSU and Western Athletic Conference champion CSU Bakersfield. The Utes then play a doubleheader at  Loyola Marymount to close the trip on a Monday afternoon
Utah will have a few days off before heading to Cathedral City, Calif., to participate in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, which runs Feb. 24-26. It starts with No. 18 Tennessee and will also play Southeastern Conference champion No. 4 LSU, Big West champion Cal State Fullerton, Houston and San Diego State
The following week, the Utes travel south for a two-day tournament in St. George. Utah will play Montana, Nevada, Binghamton and Omaha. The Utes will spend Spring Break at the Hawaii Spring Fling in Oahu with games against Toledo, Charleston Southern and the host Rainbow Wahine
The four road trips for Utah in league play will begin with a series Mar. 17-19 at No. 9 UCLA. The three-game set will be the first televised by the Pac-12 Network in 2017. The Utes also head to Stanford, Mar. 31-Apr. 2 (P12), Arizona State, Apr. 21 – 23 (P12) and Oregon State, May 5-7.
Pac-12 play begins at Dumke Stadium with a visit from No. 11 Oregon, Mar. 25-27 that will be shown live on the Pac-12 Network. The other home series on the schedule include California, Apr. 7-9, No. 15 Arizona, Apr. 13-15 (P12), and No. 13 Washington, May 11-13 (P12).
The Utes will also play four non-conference games during Pac-12 play. They head to Provo for a contest against West Coast Conference champion BYU Cougars on Mar. 22, host Big Sky champion Weber State on Apr. 26 and then welcome Grand Canyon for a doubleheader on May 2.
The NCAA Regionals will be held May 19-21 with the Super Regionals following them, May 25-28, and the last eight teams standing will advance to the College World Series, Jun. 1-7 at the ASA Hall of Fame Stadium at OGE Energy Field in Oklahoma City
The Utes return 14 letterwinners from last season's squad including Pac-12 Player of the Year and All-American Hannah Flippen and Pac-12 First Team honorees Anissa Urtez and Katie Donovan. Utah finished 35-22 overall and finished fourth in the Pac-12 Conference with a record of 13-10, its most wins since joining in 2012.
The team also finished as the 16th-ranked team in the nation in the final NFCA Poll, its highest ranking ever, The Utes also reached the postseason for a 20th time, making consecutive appearances for the first time in program history and reaching the Super Regionals.
"We will be working in some new freshmen this year, but have 10 upperclassmen that have been leading this team throughout the fall," Hogue stated. "That leadership is going to be critical to help us reach that next level and allow us to play into June this season."Â
