LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Utah Softball ran its winning streak to four games as it remained perfect at the DeMarini Desert Classic with a pair of victories. The Utes dominated UC Davis, 11-0, before besting Boise State, 9-1 in the second game.
Offensively, the Utes pounded out six home runs and hit .377 on the afternoon. Four Utes, Kristen Stewart, Hannah Flippen, Heather Bowen and Kay Kay Fronda, had multiple hits, runs scored and runs batted in.
Hailey Hilburn logged the most innings for the Utes today (five shutout innings) but did not register a result. Instead, Katie Donovan won her second in a row and Miranda Viramontes remained perfect at 4-0, as the Utes did not allow an earned run.
Utah 11, UC Davis 0, (5 innings)
The Utes pounced early as a pair of errors set the table for Heather Bowen. The Ute right fielder singled to score the first run of the game.
Kristen Stewart followed with another RBI single before Ally Dickman lifted a sac fly to left. Bridget Castro came through with another run-scoring single for a 4-0 lead after just three outs.
In the second, Hannah Flippen smacked her first home run of the day, a solo shot. After a single by Anissa Urtez, it was Bowen bombing one out for a two-run homer and a 7-0 advantage.
Urtez would knock in a run during the fourth, plating Flippen with a double to left. Two batters later, Stewart connected for her first homer of the season, a two-run tater. Kay Kay Fronda made it back-to-back jacks with a solo homer, the fourth of the game for the Utes.
Katie Donovan earned the win, going three innings and striking out four batters. Hailey Hilburn entered in relief and threw two scoreless frames.
Utah 9, Boise State 1
The Utes got things going in the second with a five-run outburst. With the bases loaded, Kay Kay Fronda ripped a double down the right-field line to get Utah on the board. One batter later, Hannah Flippen smashed a three-run home run to center, her team-leading fourth of the year.
Heather Bowen hit her second homer of the day, a deep drive to left, to start the third inning and push the Utah edge to 6-0.
After being silenced for three innings, the bats came back to life in the seventh. Flippen singled and Boise State misplayed a hit by Urtez, allowing the Utah second baseman to come all the way around and score.
After a walk, Kristen Stewart knocked another RBI single. Aubrey Peterson batted with two outs and hit one back to the mound. Fortunately, it was bobbled and the freshman reached while pinch runner Sammy Cordova scored Utah's final run.
Miranda Viramontes improved to 4-0 on the season, going three innings and striking out five batters. Hailey Hilburn saw her second bit of action on the day, lasting three innings and keep the Broncos at bay. Kayce Nieto pitched the seventh to close things out.
The Utes are back in action at 11:15 a.m. PT tomorrow against Hawai'i. This will be the only game for Utah at UNLV's Eller Media Stadium during this tournament.
