Las Vegas, Nev. - Utah Softball completed a five-game sweep of its competition this weekend at the DeMarini Desert Classic with a 9-0 conquest of Hawai'i. The Utes out scored their opponents 42-1 this weekend, batting .352 with eight home runs.
Katie Donovan evened her record at 3-3 with five shutout innings. Hawai'I only mustered two hits against the sophomore and struck out seven times. The Utes have allowed only seven runs in their first 11 games, including no earned runs this weekend.
Both teams were unable to solve the opposing pitcher until the fourth inning. That's when the Utes exploded for their best offensive inning of the season.
The first three Utes, Anissa Urtez, Heather Bowen and Kristen Stewart, all singled to load the bases. Ally Dickman hit a grounder to second that scored the game's first run.
A fielding error by the shortstop on a grounder by Bridget Castro allowed Bowen to score and double the lead. A wild pitch in the ensuing at-bat scored Stewart for a 3-0 advantage.
After a Shelby Pacheco single, Kay Kay Fronda hit a roller to second which plated pinch-runner Aubrey Peterson. Delilah Pacheco beat out a roller to third for a RBI infield single and a 5-0 lead.
After that, the Utes rattled off four more hits, all singles, to extend the lead to 8-0. Urtez, Bowen and Stewart picked up runs batted in. The last Ute score came on a ground ball to Dickman that was mishandled by the Hawai'I shortstop.
Utah heads to the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic next weekend for six games in four days. The Utes will play Oklahoma, Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, Florida, CSUN and New Mexico State.
