Palm Springs, Calif. - Utah Softball won its second-straight game at the Mary Nutter Classic this evening, 10-5 over Long Beach State. The Utes got a grand slam from Kay Kay Fronda plus key hits from Kristen Stewart and Bella Secaira in the win.
Katie Donovan won her fifth-straight start, going six innings. Her only blemish was a allowing a three-run home run. The sophomore struck out three batters.
After a scoreless first two innings, Delilah Pacheco singled with one out in the third. She moved to second on a wild pitch and would then score on a fielding error by LBSU.
Hannah Flippen stole second to get in scoring position and Heather Bowen smacked a double to the right-center gap for a 2-0 lead. Stewart followed with a two-run blast, her second of the season, doubling the Utah advantage,
LBSU answered in the bottom half with a two-out, three-run home run to slice the margin to a run. Donovan buckled down on the mound, getting seven consecutive outs, all on ground balls to maintain the lead.
In the sixth, Utah got a key insurance run. Fronda doubled to right center to start the inning but after consecutive pop-outs, it seemed the offense had stalled. However, Secaira stepped in and delivered a knock to center for a RBI single and a 5-3 lead.
The Utes poured it on in the seventh. Urtez, Bowen and Stewart loaded the bases with singles. Fronda bombed a drive to left center for a grand slam and her second home run of the season. It was Utah's first grand slam since Bridget Castro against UNLV last February.
The inning didn't end there as LBSU made a pitching change and Utah was yet to register an out. Castro walked and moved up on a wild pitch. Ally Dickman singled to left and one batter later, Pacheco came through with a slapper over the shortstops head for a RBI single.
Kayce Nieto closed the game for the Utes in her fifth appearance of the season as LBSU plated two for the final score.
Utah continues play tomorrow with No. 1 Florida at 9:30 a.m. and follows that with CSUN at 3 p.m.
