Palm Springs, Calif. - Utah Softball capped another winning weekend with a 10-4 win over New Mexico State this afternoon. The Utes went 4-2 at the Mary Nutter Classic with the only setbacks against No. 12 Oklahoma and No. 1 Florida.
Hailey Hilburn picked up the win and the freshman improved to 3-0 on the season. She allowed one run on five hits in three innings of relief.
The Utes rapped three-straight singles with two outs in the first to take a 1-0 lead. Kristen Stewart socked one up the middle to bring home Delilah Pacheco. Stewart had a team-high seven RBI this weekend to pace the Utes, while batting .467.
NMSU pushed past a tiring Miranda Viramontes on the mound in the third. With two outs, a double to left tied the score. The very next batter came through with a two-run single for a 3-1 Aggie lead.
In the bottom of the frame, Anissa Urtez singled and would score when Kay Kay Fronda crushed a triple over the right-fielder's head. Over the six games this weekend, Urtez batted .550 for the Utes with a team-high six runs scored.
Dickman laced a doubled to the gap during the following at-bat to tie the score, 3-3, and the freshman would have another big at-bat later in the game.
In the fourth Shelby and Delilah Pacheco each singled and the leadoff hitter for the Utes then stole second. With two in scoring position, Urtez put the Utes in front with a RBI single. Heather Bowen and Stewart also followed with hits to push the Utes in front 6-3.
With the bases loaded, up stepped Dickman. She unloaded for her first collegiate home run, a grand slam no less, to put the Utes in double figures for the third time this season.
NMSU scored a run in the sixth off Hilburn for the final margin. Viramontes, who started for the Utes, surrendered three runs in three innings coming off a complete game performance vs. No. 1 Florida yesterday.
The Utes have a week off before heading to Florida for seven games in five days. Utah will start with a doubleheader at USF on Wed., March 9.
