ORLANDO - Utah Softball split its first two games at the UCF Spring Fling today, winning 6-0 over Indiana State this morning before falling to the No. 25 Golden Knights in an afternoon affair.
Utah 6, Indiana State 0
Katie Donovan allowed only one hit over five innings of work and Utah cruised to a victory over Indiana State this morning to open the tournament.
Donovan earned her seventh win of the season, with the only blemish on her ledger occurring on a close play at first during her final inning of work.
Utah came out aggressively with three runs in the first inning against the Sycamores. Delilah Pacheco drew a walk and stole second base. The Utah leadoff hitter would score when Hannah Flippen belted a double to center.
Anissa Urtez followed with a single up the middle to double the Ute advantage. Then Kristen Stewart singled and when Utah attempted a double-steal, Urtez was ruled safe at home, giving it a 3-0 lead.
In the fourth, Utah added to its lead. Bridget Castro led off with a hot shot to short and was lifted for pinch-runner Aubrey Peterson. After a sacrifice bunt for Shelby Pacheco, Delilah Pacheco lifted a base-hit to left for a 4-0 lead.
Flippen would follow and reach due to a bobble by the shortstop. With two on and two out, Urtez slapped a pitch through the right side for her second RBI of the game.
The following inning, Stewart started things with a double down the left-field line. Heather Bowen followed with a shot into the left-center gap for a 6-0 edge.
Hailey Hilburn pitched a perfect sixth, adding two more strikeouts, while Sammy Cordova came on in the seventh to complete the shutout.
No. 25 UCF 4, Utah 3
Utah's chance at a 2-0 start to the weekend vanished thanks to a walk-off hit for the home side. Hannah Flippen homered and drove in a pair for the Utes in the close loss.
Miranda Viramontes earned the start and allowed only one earned run in 4 2/3 innings, but did walk five batters. Katie Donovan came on in relief and struck out three batters in two innings despite being saddled with the loss.
Utah put a pair on with two outs in the first after Anissa Urtez and Kristen Stewart earned back-to-back walks. However, a popup in front of the plate ended the threat. The Golden Knights made them pay right from the jump with a two-out RBI single off the bat of Samantha McCloskey.
Utah had a chance to get even in the second when Bridget Castro worked a one-out walk. She was lifted for pinch-runner Aubrey Peterson, who then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Shelby Pacheco. However, with two outs, the Utes could not knock in the tying run.
In the third, the Utes finally got even when Flippen uncorked a solo homer over the left-center wall. It was the junior's fifth home run of the season, tops on the team.
An inning later, Ally Dickman led off with a single to left. Castro laid down a sacrifice bunt but UCF's throw to second was dropped. With two on and no one out, Shelby Pacheco put down another bunt to move both runners up a bag.
After a walk to Kay Kay Fronda loaded the bases, pinch-hitter Bella Secaira came through with a single to left that pushed the Utes in front, 2-1.
In the bottom of the fifth, UCF would tie the game on an error by the Utes and then regained the lead, 3-2, on a bases-loaded walk.
Fronda walked with one out in the sixth and moved to second after a sacrifice bunt from Delilah Pacheco. The Utah left fielder then moved to third when the ball went between the wickets of the UCF catcher. Flippen delivered another clutch hit when she legged out an infield single to tie the game.
Despite Utah's best efforts, UCF would walk-off with the victory in the bottom of the seventh.
Utah will continue play in the UCF Spring Fling tomorrow with Florida Gulf Coast at 11 a.m. ET and Purdue at 3:30 p.m. ET
