Orlando, Fla. - Utah Softball got two impressive pitching performances from Hailey Hilburn and Katie Donovan, as well as clutch hits from Bridget Castro, Maddie Roth and Hannah Flippen, in a pair of wins at the UCF Spring Fling.
Utah 7, FGCU 0
Bridget Castro broke things open with a two-run triple and paced a balanced offensive attack that saw four Utes collect two hits in a win over the Eagles this morning.
Katie Donovan took the start and pitched a scoreless two innings as the Utes built a lead. Hailey Hilburn threw four scoreless innings in relief and struck out four batters to pick up the win, improving to 4-1. Sammy Cordova pitched a scoreless seventh to keep the shutout intact.
The Utes grabbed the lead in the third with three-straight singles from Delilah Pacheco, Hannah Flippen and Anissa Urtez. Kay Kay Fronda was then able to drop a ball in front of a diving right fielder for a 2-0 lead.
The big hit of the inning was next when Castro smacked a two-run triple down the right-field line, doubling the Ute lead. After a pitching change, FGCU uncorked a wild one, allowing Castro to come home from third for a 5-0 edge.
In the sixth, Hilburn led off with a single and stole second. She then scored when Delilah Pacheco hit a RBI double down the left-field line. Flippen then hit a ball to the wall in left that was dropped by the FGCU fielder, allowing Pacheco to come home for a 7-0 lead.
Utah 3, Purdue 1
Maddie Roth's first collegiate home run, a two-run blast, gave Utah the lead and Katie Donovan took over from there as the Utes picked up the Saturday sweep.
The sophomore hurler threw a complete game and improved to 8-5 on the year. She also matched her career high by striking out eight Boilermakers.
Utah had a chance to grab the lead early when Delilah Pacheco walked and Hannah Flippen bunted her up to second. Anissa Urtez followed with a grounder to the right side, moving Utah's leadoff hitter over to third. However, a line drive to right was caught and the game remained scoreless.
In the bottom of the third, Utah broke through. An illegal pitch gave Shelby Pacheco new life and she drew a walk. The next batter was Roth and the freshman rapped a two-run homer to get the Utes on the board.
In the fifth, Heather Bowen drew a walk and was substituted for pinch-runner Aubrey Peterson. The freshman moved up on a sac bunt by Shelby Pacheco. After a walk to Roth, Delilah Pacheco also bunted to put a pair of runners in scoring position. Flipped followed with a clutch hit past the third baseman for a 3-0 lead.
Purdue got a run back in the sixth on a RBI single from designated player Katie Harrison but Donovan was able to quell the Boilermakers and keep them from adding more.
Utah had a chance to tack on insurance runs in the sixth when Bridget Castro walked with two outs. Peterson followed with an infield hit, but once again a fly out would keep the Utes from scoring.
In the end, it would not matter as Donovan finished the game in style by capping a complete-game performance.
Utah concludes play at the UCF Spring Fling tomorrow with another contest against Purdue at 11 a.m. ET
