Orlando, Fla. - Utah Softball closed the UCF Spring Fling with a 4-2 win over Purdue this afternoon. Anissa Urtez reached base four times, driving in a pair, and Hailey Hilburn had a key pinch-hit, two-run single as the Utes finished 4-1 at the tournament.
Miranda Viramontes pitched her second complete game of the season and struck out a career-high six batters. It was the second game in a row where a Utah pitcher notched a career-high for strikeouts as Katie Donovan whiffed eight Boilermaker batters yesterday.
Utah looked like it would take an early lead when Urtez doubled with two outs in the first. However, a groundout kept her there and the game scoreless.
Utah did break through in the third as Maddie Roth reached on an error by the shortstop. Aubrey Peterson came in to pinch-run and moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Delilah Pacheco. Hannah Flippen sent a grounder to the right side to get Peterson over and Urtez slapped a ball through the left side to put Utah ahead 1-0.
No one was able to mount anything of a threat until the fifth when Roth and Pacheco each reached on ground balls to short. With two outs, it was Urtez coming through again with a hit to center to double the Ute lead.
In the bottom of the inning, Heather Knight hit her second homer of the season, a solo shot, to pull Purdue back within one.
Utah had a chance at extending its lead in the sixth when Bridget Castro and Shelby Pacheco drew walks. However, a strikeout silenced the threat.
The same opportunity occurred in the seventh and this time, the Utes would not be denied. Flippen reached on an error, Urtez was intentionally walked and Kay Kay Fronda got plunked to load the bases with two outs. Hilburn entered as a pinch-hitter and dropped in a two-run single to give Utah a 4-1 advantage.
Purdue tacked on a run in the seventh but Viramontes calmly retired the side to preserve the Utah victory.
Utah has its home opener on Tuesday at 4 p.m. MT against BYU. There will be free hot chocolate as well as magnet and t-shirt giveaways. The game will be televised on the Pac-12 Network.
