SALT LAKE CITY - Utah Softball tried to erase a three-run deficit in the seventh inning but came up just short, losing 5-4 to BYU this evening at Dumke Family Softball Stadium.
After Utah got out of a jam in the first, Delilah Pacheco walked to lead off the game. With two outs, she advanced to second on a wild pitch but was stranded after a strikeout.
Both batting orders were stifled until the fourth when the Cougars got on the board after a throwing error by the Utes with two outs. In the bottom half of the inning, Anissa Urtez reached second on a miscommunication by a pair of BYU fielders. However, Utah grounded out and struck out to end the inning and strand the Utah shortstop.
With two down in the fifth, Kay Kay Fronda singled and Pacheco walked but a fly out kept Utah off the board and down a run. The missed opportunities would hurt even more when BYU connected for a two-out, two-run triple in the sixth to take a 3-0 lead.
With one out in the sixth, Urtez and Heather Bowen connected on consecutive doubles to get the Utes on the board. Maddie Roth followed with a single and pinch-hitter Hailey Hilburn connected on a sacrifice fly to pull Utah within a run at 3-2. After a Shelby Pacheco walk put two on with two out, BYU got a strikeout to end the frame.
The Cougars struck again in the seventh when Libby Sugg hit her 12th home run of the season, a two-run shot, to push the margin back to three.
Utah countered during its last chance in the seventh. Delilah Pacheco was plunked in the head and an error put two runners in scoring position and the tying run to the plate. Hannah Flippen knocked one in with a sacrifice fly and an error during an Urtez at-bat brought another run home, making the score 5-4.
A grounder to second moved the tying run to third with two outs but another groundout brought the game to a close.
Utah struggled in the circle as Katie Donovan walked six batters in 5 2/3 innings and Miranda Viramontes was tagged for two runs in 1 1/3 innings of relief.
The Utes are back in action tomorrow with a doubleheader against Southern Utah. The first game will start at 3 p.m. MT with the second game scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Both contests can be seen on the Pac-12 Networks.
