UTAH vs. FRESNO STATE Post Game Notes
NCAA Tournament, First Round (Denver, Colo.)
Utah 80, Fresno State 69
• The Utes improved to 11-4 all-time against Fresno State. Their last meeting was in
2013 (a 90-77 Utah victory). It was their first time meeting in the NCAA Tournament
and first time on a neutral court.
• Fresno State took its only lead of the game in the midst of a 13-3 run in the middle of
the second half thanks to Julien Lewis' three-pointer at the 10:32 mark. Utah responded
with a 19-2 run from that point to regain control. Fresno State led for a total of 33
seconds.
• The largest single run of the game was Utah's 12-0 spurt over a 2:45 stretch midway
through the first half after Fresno State took its only lead.
• During a period of 5:46 (16:18-10:32 in the second half), the two teams combined to
make 12 of 14 field goals and score 32 total points.
• Utah out-rebounded Fresno State, 38-15, and had as many offensive boards as Fresno
State had total rebounds. Fresno State's previous season low in rebounding was 25.
• Utah made its second consecutive and 29th overall appearance in the NCAA
tournament. The Utes are 38-31 all time in the NCAA tournament, including 7-2 as a
No. 3 seed.
• Utah jumped out to a 9-2 run early.
• Following Fresno State's only lead (48-47), Utah responded with a 19-2 run over a
period of 5:58 to take a 66-50 advantage - the largest of the contest.
• From 14:04 to 8:34 in the second half, Utah connected on six consecutive field goals,
each by a different player.
• Utah held Fresno State to just 15 rebounds, out-rebounding the Bulldogs by 22 (37-15).
The Utes are 23-2 this season when holding the edge in rebounds.
• Utah, which led the Pac-12 with a 48.9 field-goal percentage, shot 54.0 percent from
the field, including 65.0 percent in the second half.
• John Wooden Award top 10 semifinalist Jakob Poeltl had a career-high 18 rebounds,
the most by a Ute since 2013. The sophomore also tallied his 16th double-double of the
season and 19th of his career.
• With 16 points, Poeltl became the first Ute since Andrew Bogut (2004-05) to score 600
points in a season. He is the 13th player in school history to join the 600-point club.
• Senior G Brandon Taylor moved up to third on Utah's career steals list. He had four in
the win and now has 160 for his career, passing Pace Mannion (1979-83). Taylor is two
three-pointers away from moving into second in Utah history.
• Four Utes had at least 16 points: Lorenzo Bonam (17), Jordan Loveridge (16), Poeltl
(16) and Taylor (16).
