BERKELEY, Calif. - Utah Softball split a doubleheader at Cal this evening, winning the second game, 5-0, after dropping the opener, 4-3 in eight innings.
For the weekend, Anissa Urtez led the team with a .444 average and four runs batted in, including her first home run of the season. Delilah Pacheco led the team with four hits and batted .364, while Hannah Flippen hit .375, scoring four times.
Utah 5, Cal 0
Katie Donovan was masterful in the circle as Utah won the second game of its doubleheader at Cal. The sophomore improved to 12-7 on the season with a three-hit, complete-game shutout.
Donovan also racked up five strikeouts, getting her to the century mark this season. It was her ninth complete game of the season and second shutout.
The Utah offense was built around the long ball as a pair of two-run homers provided most of the scoring. Heather Bowen and Anissa Urtez each hit two-run dingers and the first four batters in the lineup were a combined 7-for-14 (D. Pacheco, Flippen, Urtez, Bowen)
In the third, Delilah Pacheco singled and Hannah Flippen reached via an error. With two outs, Utah perfectly executed a double steal that allowed the Ute centerfielder to score from third. Bowen followed with a two-run homer, her fourth of the season.
Leading 3-0, Pacheco reached base once again, this time on a Cal error in the seventh. She came around to score for a second time when Urtez clocked her first homer of the season for the final score.
Cal 4, Utah 3 (8 inn.)
The Golden Bears grabbed the opener in extra innings when leadoff hitter Jazmyn Jackson singled to center with the bases loaded and two outs in the eighth.
Utah had just picked up the second out when the ball was hit back to the mound and pitcher Miranda Viramontes fielded cleanly, threw to Shelby Pacheco who was covering the plate, and got a force. However, that last out remained elusive as Cal got the clutch hit.
For Viramontes, it was her fourth complete game of the season, but she fell to 6-4 with the loss. The sophomore allowed four runs on nine hits, walking four and striking out three.
Nisa Ontiveros earned the win for Cal, improving to 5-4 after allowing two earned runs and striking out eight in eight innings.
Utah continued its trend of scoring first as Hannah Flippen drew a four-pitch walk with one out, stole second and moved to third on a passed ball. She would score on an Anissa Urtez sac fly for a 1-0 lead.
Cal quickly answered as Annie Aldrete homered during its initial at-bat, tying the game. In the second, Taylor Koenig hit her third long-ball of the season, a two-run shot, to put the Golden Bears in front, 3-1.
In the third, K.K. Fronda led off with a single, one of her two hits on the day. She moved to second on a Shelby Pacheco sacrifice and then over to third when Delilah Pacheco grounded out. However, another ground out ended the inning.
Cal almost added to its lead in the fourth when it had two on and one out, but Viramontes got a "K" and a grounder to keep it a two-run game.
In the fifth, the Utes drew even as Kristen Stewart launched her third homer of the season. She brought home Haile Hilburn who had started the frame with a walk.
Cal almost regained the lead in the sixth when the first two batters reached, but Urtez got a force at third on a grounder before Viramontes induced a foul pop and a strikeout to make sure it stayed tied
The Golden Bears threatened again with two on and one out in the seventh but the Ute pitcher was able to get a grounder back to her before whiffing another batter to send the game to extras.
Utah had their chance in the top of the eight to forge ahead as Delilah Pacheco and Flippen both singled to start. However, a pair of flyouts was followed by a ground ball that allowed the home team to walk off winners.
Utah is back home for the first time in four weeks on Tuesday when it hosts Weber State at Dumke Family Softball Stadium at 4 p.m.
