EUGENE, Ore. - Utah Softball went for the series win this evening at No. 3 Oregon, but dropped the finale, 3-2.
The pitching and defense shown in the series by the Utes was exceptional. Utah turned four double plays today and held a Duck team averaging almost eight runs a game to 10 total in three contests.
Hailey Hilburn started and threw two innings while Katie Donovan, who pitched a complete game last night, entered and threw four innings in relief. Unfortunately, she also suffered the loss and fell to 18-10 despite allowing just two runs and striking out three.
Cheridan Hawkins pitched for the Ducks and with a complete game victory, improved to 21-3. She also struck out seven Utes.
Kay Kay Fronda singled to start the game and Hannah Flippen laid down a perfect bunt putting two runners on base. Anissa Urtez followed with another bunt and a bad throw plated Fronda for a 1-0 lead. Some miscommunication on a double-steal attempt allowed Flippen a chance to come home without a throw and double the advantage.
Geri Ann Glasco's 13th homer started the second as her solo shot carved the Ute lead in half.
Donovan faced the minimum through her first two innings of relief but ran into trouble in the fifth. After a heated exchange at home plate regarding balls and strikes, Jenna Lilley smacked a 3-2 pitch for a two-run single and Oregon grabbed the lead, 3-2.
With Hawkins in command, Utah had its best chance to score in the sixth. Urtez knocked her league-leading 16th double with one out and moved over to third on a passed ball. Despite the opportunity, the Utes could not even the score.
The Utes will now wait and see where they will head in the NCAA Tournament. The selection show is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. MT tomorrow evening on ESPNU.
