LAS VEGAS – The Utah Runnin' Utes (4-1) suffered its first defeat of the 2017-18 season, falling 85-58 to the UNLV Runnin' Rebels (5-0) in the championship game of the MGM Resorts Main Event Wednesday evening at T-Mobile Arena.
UNLV took a 43-33 into the halftime break after shooting .484 percent from the field and limiting Utah to just a percentage of .370.
Tyler Rawson led the Utes at the break with 10 points, while both
Justin Bibbins and
Donnie Tillman chipped with eight points apiece. Bibbins, Tillman,
David Collette and
Sedrick Barefield were limited in first half minutes though, as all four players picked up two fouls.
Utah took its first lead at the 15:30 mark, 10-9, following a bucket from
Jayce Johnson, but an 8-0 run pushed the UNLV lead to 17-10. Rawson hit a three-pointer to end a four-plus minute dry spell and Tillman followed with a bucket and a pair of free throws to notch things up at 17-17. Collette later tied the score at 21-all, but UNLV would go onto close out the first half outscoring the Utes, 22-12, to take the 10-point lead into the intermission.
UNLV opened the second half with an 8-2 run and never looked back on the way to a 27-point victory. Utah was limited to just a .333 shooting percentage in the second half, going 0-of-9 from three-point range. The Rebels shot .571 from the field in the second half and tallied percentage of .500 in the game.
Utah will take the Thanksgiving holiday off, but will be back in action the following day, hosting Eastern Washington at the Huntsman Center on Friday, Nov. 24. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. MST.
