SALT LAKE CITY - Utah Soccer was defeated in its final match of the season, 2-0, by Colorado. Prior to the contest, the Utes acknowledged the accomplishment of four student-athletes;
Madi Clarkson,
Janie Kearl,
July Mathias and
Natalie Vukic.
Colorado made its plan of attack clear from the start, with Taylor Kornieck booting a long ball right to Mathias from the kick-off.
Utah had a great chance early when
Aleea Gwerder's deep kick off a corner rattled the crossbar.
However, Colorado struck first when a free kick was taken by goalkeeper Jalen Tompkins. Her boot was flicked on by Camilla Shymka and Megan Massey smashed a ball right down the middle, just under the crossbar for a lead in the 12
th minute.
After gaining the edge with its only shot on goal of the half, Colorado managed to withstand Utah's pressure for the remaining half hour.
Hailey Skolmoski,
Max Flom and
Haley Farrar all registered shots with Thompkins stopping
Jessica Hixson and
Paola van der Veen.
Utah had a nice chance on the hour when a corner met the head of Vukic. However, her try was chased down by Tompkins. Ten minutes later, a free kick from Van der Veen was snuffed out by a CU defender and
Natalie Kump's second effort was also blocked. The ball fell to Farrar and her rocket was held by Tompkins.
With ten minutes remaining in regulation, a free kick set Kump up for another shot on goal. Moments later, Skolmoski had a try deflected by a Buffalo defender. The last chance was another effort by Kump that sailed over the crossbar.
Meanwhile, Colorado's three chances of the second stanza all fell to Kornieck and Mathias was there to stop all of them. However, in the final minute, along ball by Tompkins was misplayed in the back and allowed Tatum Barton to get off a dribbling shot that nicked in off the right post for the final tally.
