ANCHORAGE - Merete Myrseth won the women's 15-km freestyle as the Utah ski team closed out the UAA Invitational with a victory on Sunday afternoon, concluding the skiers' races in Alaska this season.
It was Myrseth's second win of the season. She also won the freestyle sprint earlier this week in the Seawolf Invite.
Guro Jordheim picked up her fourth podium of the year with a second-place finish.
Leah Lange placed 19th for the Utes while
Josefin Nilsson was 27th. Utah had a race-high 91 points in the race.
In the men's race,
Martin Bergström finished third for his second individual podium of the year.
Kevin Bolger was fourth (his seventh top 10 of the year) with
Martin Mikkelsen sixth (his fifth top 10 of the year), with the trio combining for 92 points in the race.
Oscar Ivars placed 15th with
Logan Diekmann 18th and
Jacob Engström 23rd.
"After a few weeks away from the RMISA circuit, it's nice to be back!" Utah head Nordic coach
Abi Holt said. "Over the course of this series of races in Alaska we have seen Bolger, Bergstrom, Jordheim and Merseth find their way to the podium, and Mikkelsen was close. Overall, this team's skiing is very solid right now. We didn't run away with these races, and there is still plenty of work to do, but I think this week's results indicate that we are on track. Tonight we will take the red eye flight home, then on Tuesday we will turn our full focus to the championship segment of the season. This has been a good race series; now we are looking forward to the next phase!"
Utah had 661 points for its second-straight meet win, topping Denver in second (636). Colorado finished third (544) followed by New Mexico in fourth (497) and Montana State in fifth (441).
"We are ecstatic with our victory!" Utah Director of Skiing
Kevin Sweeney said. "I am impressed with the individual efforts as well as some very strong team skiing. The conditions were challenging and I think everyone had to dig super deep, so I am pleased to know that we are capable of doing that. This meet should build confidence, but also remind us of how competitive it is right now."
The alpine and Nordic teams return to action with the RMISA Championships, hosted by Denver from Feb. 24-26.
