Junior collects three RBI and Utah stays perfect
LONG BEACH, Calif. - Utah Softball (8-0) got a homer and three runs batted in from Heather Bowen to  best Loyola Marymount, 6-2.
Utah pounced with a pair in the first against the Lions. Hannah Flippen reached on a fielder's choice and with two outs, stole second. Bowen took a 1-2 offering and smashed it over the glove of LMU's shortstop for a RBI single. The junior was lifted for pinch-runner Aubrey Peterson who also stole second and moved to third on an illegal pitch. Ally Dickman drover her in with a single to left for a 2-0 lead.
Thirty-three innings of scoreless softball came to an end on the first pitch in the fourth when Caitlin Harman, LMU's leadoff hitter, took Katie Donovan deep to left. The right-hander went five innings to improve to 5-0 on the season for the Utes.
Singles from Alyssa Barrera and Flippen started the fifth and they advanced on an Anissa Urtez bunt. Bowen then put down a beautiful squeeze bunt to plate another run. Utah attempted a double steal and with Bowen involved in a rundown, Flippen crossed home for a 4-1 edge.Â
The inning continued with Dickman dropping a ball just fair over the third baseman's head and then hustling for a double. She was lifted for pinch-runner Sammy Cordova who subsequently scored on a Kelly Martinez single to right.
LMU loaded the bases thanks to some hard-hit balls that didn't make it out of the infield. However, it could only muster one run on a wild pitch thanks to a nice running catch in foul ground by Kay Kay Fronda and diving snag by Bridget Castro.
Coming off her perfect game yesterday, Miranda Viramontes entered in the sixth and was spotless over the final two frames to earn her first save of the year. Bowen crushed her second homer of the season, a solo shot, to lead-off the seventh and ice the game away.
Utah returns to California this weekend for the Mary Nutter Classic in Palm Springs. The Utes will play five games over three days, Feb. 23-25.
