No. 17 Utah Softball heads to the prestigious Mary Nutter Classic this weekend in Palm Springs, Calif. The Utes face a difficult slate of games against No. 7 LSU, No. 13 Tennessee, Houston, San Diego State and Cal State Fullerton
UTAH NOTES
- Utah slipped back to No. 17 in both the ESPN/USA Softball and NFCA/USA Today rankings despite remaining one of 14 unbeaten teams in the nation. Last week's No. 15 ranking was the high-water mark in program history.
- Utah currently ranks in the top-10 nationally in a number of different categories. The Utes are fifth in on-base percentage (.488), seventh in batting average (.389), eighth in team ERA (0.88) and ninth in scoring (8.63 runs per game).
- Miranda Viramontes threw a perfect game for Utah last weekend, it's first in over a decade, and sits at 3-0. Katie Donovan is 5-0 this year and recently surpassed 300 strikeouts for her career. She ranks fourth in the Pac-12 with a 0.63 ERA and ninth in strikeouts. Hailey Hilburn is yet to allow a hit in seven innings of relief. As a team, the Utes have a 6:1 strikeout to walk ratio
- Freshman Alyssa Barrera has hit safely in her first eight contests and is second on the team with a .524 batting average. She leads the Pac-12 with a .633 on-base percentage and is one of 10 players who has not struck out this season (along with teammate Bridget Castro). Barrera ranks second on the team with 10 runs scored and three stolen bases.Â
- Anissa Urtez has been outstanding over the first two weeks of the season, batting 542, fourth in the Pac-12, and owning a .708 slugging percentage. She also ranks fifth in the Pac-12 with four doubles and is second on the roster in runs batted in.
- Hannah Flippen recently surpassed the 200-hit and 100-RBI plateaus for her career.  This past weekend, she passed Kate Dickman for second place all-time with 163 runs scored. She is 14 shy of the record set by Sandy Rhea (1995-98) and leads the Pac-12 in runs per game.
- Heather Bowen is also heating up with 14 runs batted in and a .731 slugging percentage. She ranks 11th nationally in runs batted in and her second homer of the season puts her 10th in the Pac-12.
- Last season, Utah went 35-22 overall, its most wins since joining in 2012, and finished fourth in the Pac-12 Conference with a record of 13-10, also a program best. It became the first team in program history to start a NCAA Tournament with two wins and reached its first Super Regional since the expansion of the event
LAST WEEK
The Utes improved to 8-0 after a weekend ravaged by rain limited the Utes to three games. Miranda Viramontes threw Utah's first perfect game in over a decade vs. CSU Bakersfield and then Katie Donovan improved to 5-0 on the season with another shutout as the Utes ran their scoreless streak to 33 innings before having it snapped Monday vs. LMU
Alyssa Barrera led the team with a .625 batting average and five runs scored. She reached base nine times in three games for Utah. Hannah Flippen batted .600 and also scored five runs while Heather Bowen batted .600 with her second homer of the season and a team-high five runs batted in.
