Utes drop tough matches at Blue Gray Classic

Montgomery, Ala.-- University of Utah women's tennis took two tough losses in the opening rounds of the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic. In the first round, the Utes fell to top seed and No. 7 ranked Texas Tech, 4-0. The Utes were also defeated by Tulsa in the second round, 4-0.

Against Texas Tech, the Utes dropped the doubles point as Alexia Petrovic and Whitney Turley were defeated by Alba Cortina-Pou and Alex Valenstein, 6-1 and Taylor Calton and Jena Cheng fell to the No. 33 duo of Gabriela Talaba and Felicity Maltby, 6-3. Margo Pletcher and Brianna Turley led the No. 23 doubles team of Sarah Dvorak and Sabrinia Federici in the No. 1 spot 4-3 when the match was abandoned. Three Utes dropped singles matches ending the first round.

In the second round against Tulsa, Pletcher and Turley defeated Ksenia Laskutova and Martina Okalova, 6-2 in No. 1 doubles. Calton and Cheng fell to Rongrong Leenabanchong and Martha Matoula, 6-2 while Petrovic and Turley fell to Marcelina Cichon and Mahitha Dadireddy in a tough 7-6 loss. Three Utes were defeated in singles competition to end the round. Petrovic came back from a first set loss to Dadireddy, 6-2, to win the second set, 6-1, when the match was abandoned.
