Junior tames Tigers with CG shutout
PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – Katie Donovan pitched a complete-game shutout and Hannah Flippen hit a monster homer as No. 17 Utah beat No. 7 LSU, 3-0
Donovan escaped some early jams and finished with a season-high seven strikeouts while the reigning Pac-12 Player of the Year pummeled her first homer of the season to push the Utes to victory.
LSU put runners on the corners to start the game but Donovan struck out the side to escape unscathed. The Tigers put two in scoring position in the second but Donovan induced a grounder and got another "K" to end the threat.
Heather Bowen walked and Kelly Martinez singled to create Utah's first chance but a pair of grounders ended the inning. Martinez made a pair of nice defensive plays in the next two frames. In the third, she snared a foul pop and doubled up a Tiger runner at first and in the fourth, she threw out her third baserunner of the year.
The Utes went ahead in the bottom half when Anissa Urtez and Bowen singled to start it off. After an Ally Dickman grounder, Martinez blooped a ball to right for a 1-0 edge.
Flippen smashed a shot to dead center in the fifth, a two-run homer, to create the winning margin. Meanwhile, Donovan retired the final eight batters to improve to 7-0 on the season.
