SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah baseball team rallied from an early deficit before falling to BYU, 11-6, on Tuesday evening.
BYU led 7-3 before Utah rallied for three runs in the fifth to come within a run, 7-6. The Cougars pulled ahead late for four runs in the ninth for the final score.
Utah was led at the plate by three hits each from
DaShawn Keirsey, Jr.,
Ellis Kelly and
Hunter Simmons.
Zack Moeller went 2-for-4 with two RBI while pinch-hitter
Wade Gulden came through with a two-RBI single in his only at-bat.
Utah used eight pitchers on the night, with the most effective
Spencer Kevin Johnson, who threw two hitless and scoreless innings with two strikeouts in his Utah debut.
Tanner Thomas allowed one hit, two walks and had a strikeout over two innings pitched.
Utah starter
Jacob Rebar was chased in the first inning as he surrendered three walks, two hits and four runs before
Chase Bauerle entered with one out to get the final two outs of the inning.
Utah put up two runs in the bottom of the first to cut BYU's lead to 4-2. Moeller hit a two-RBI single after
Oliver Dunn singled and Simmons walked.
BYU continued to pull ahead in the top of the second with three runs off of three hits, including a two-RBI triple, for a 7-2 lead.
Utah made it 7-3 in the bottom of the second after Kelly singled and Dunn hit an RBI triple to right center.
The Utes pulled to within a run in the bottom of the fifth. Utah loaded the bases with no outs after
Dallas Carroll walked and Simmons and Moeller singled. After a strikeout,
Dominic Foscalina hit into a sacrifice fly and Carroll beat the throw home to score the first run of the inning. Pinch-hitter Gulden hit a well-placed bloop single to right field to score a pair of runs, cutting the lead to 7-6.
Utah left runners on in the seventh and eighth innings and stranded the bases loaded in the eighth. BYU had six hits in the top of the ninth to increase its advantage by four runs. In the bottom of the ninth, Foscalina singled to lead off the inning and after a strikeout and fly out, Keirsey beat out an infield single to put two on before a ground out ended the game.
Utah has its first home Pac-12 series of the season this week, opening a three-game series on Thursday, March 30 against Oregon at 7:00 p.m. MT.
