SALT LAKE CITY - A 10-run sixth inning for Oregon doomed the Utah baseball team in dropping the first game of the three-game series to the Ducks on Friday evening in the Utes Pac-12 home opener.
Utah (10-13, 1-6 Pac-12) was led at the plate by
DaShawn Keirsey, Jr., and
Oliver Dunn, who had two hits each.
Jayson Rose pitched 5 2/3 innings on the mound, allowing 10 runs (nine earned) on seven hits with three walks and four strikeouts in the loss. He falls to 3-2 on the year. Josh Tedeschi threw 2 1/3 innings, allowing one run on four hits with two walks, while
Trenton Stoltz threw the final inning.
Rose for Utah and David Petersen for Oregon were dealing early. Utah put up a 1-0 lead in the third inning after Dunn led off the inning with a single and Keirsey, drove him in with a single after a sacrifice bunt.
Oregon started the sixth inning with a triple, and the Ducks had six additional hits in the inning plus took advantage of three walks to score 10 runs to take control of the game. Oregon added a run in the eighth, with a run on a ground out following a pair of leadoff singles for an 11-1 lead.
Utah loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth after singles from Dunn,
Ellis Kelly and Keirsey with one out but the Utes left the bases loaded after a strikeout and ground out.
Utah and Oregon play game two of the three-game series on Saturday, April 1, at 12:00 p.m. MT. The game will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
