ST. LOUIS—
MyKayla Skinner became just the third NCAA floor exercise champion in Utah history and the first since 1992 after scoring a 9.9625 on her signature event. The outright floor champion in the afternoon semifinal, Skinner later finished in a tie with Ashley Gnat of LSU of the evening session. Her floor title was one of four top-10 finishes for Skinner, who took second overall in the all-around (39.6125), fifth on vault (9.90) and eighth on beam (9.9125). In addition to her floor title, she had the best all-around and vault scores in semifinal I.
Â
Her semifinal victories raised Skinner's season win total to 43 (second in Utah history) and she has won all but one all-around and vault title this season.
Â
Scores typically rise in the evening semifinal at the NCAA Championships, making Skinner's victory on the floor and second place all-around finish all the more impressive. She joins Lisa Mitzel (1985) and Missy Marlowe (1992) as Utah's only floor champions. Skinner is one of just five Ute freshmen ever to win an NCAA individual event title, joining Elaine Alfano (vault, 1982), Summer Reid (beam, 1996), Theresa Kulikowski (all-around and beam, 1999) and Baskett (bars, 2006).
Â
Skinner's second place all-around finish is Utah's best since Ashley Postell (2006-08) and Baskett (2009) gave Utah an all-around silver medalist for four straight years.
Â
Five of the top six ranked all-arounders from the regular season were in the afternoon session and Skinner beat them all. Senior teammate
Baely Rowe joined her in the top five in the afternoon semifinal, placing fifth with a 39.400. Rowe finished 13th overall in the all-around and 10th on floor. Sophomore
MaKenna Merrell also cracked the top 15 across both sessions, placing 12th on beam with a 9.90.
Â
The NCAA Championships continue Saturday night with the Super Six team finals, where Utah will square off against Oklahoma, UCLA, LSU, Florida and Alabama at 7:00 MT on ESPNU.
