Utes lose on walk-off triple after scoring change
TEMPE, Ariz. – No. 10 Utah Softball allowed four runs in the seventh inning and lost on a walk-off triple during its opener at No. 23 Arizona State, 9-8
The Utes led by five in the sixth inning but could not kill off the Sun Devils who hit a pair of three-run homers, or so it seemed, to come back for the win.
Miranda Viramontes (12-2) matched her career high with seven strikeouts and threw 131 pitches, a season high, allowing four earned runs on 10 hits. Entering tonight's game, she had allowed just one home run all season.
The Utes scored four runs in three innings off ASU starter Breanna Macha and then added four runs in four innings off reliever Dale Ryndak.
After both teams were held in check during the first two frames, Utah opened the scoring in the third. With one out, BreOnna Castaneda reached on an error. Alyssa Barrera singled and Hannah Flippen brought both base runners home with a double to right center. With the knock, Flippen moved into fourth place all-time with 246 hits, passing Diana Phillips (2005-08).
Anissa Urtez followed with her second homer of the season to dead center for a 4-0 lead. She now has 148 runs batted in for her career, five shy of fourth place all-time for the Utes.
In the bottom half of the inning, ASU got on the board with some two-out magic. Utah errors allowed Taylor Becerra to reach and then score ASU's first run of the game. Chelsea Gonzales added a RBI single to cut the gap to 4-2.
In the sixth, Kay Kay Fronda singled with one out, Castaneda reached again on an error and Kelly Martinez took the first pitch she saw to right for a single that loaded the bases.
Delilah Pacheco slapped one to SS and even though ASU got an out, Utah got the run it needed. Barrera followed with her third hit of the night, a single up the middle that tacked on another run. After pitching around Flippen, Urtez worked a bases-loaded walk for a 7-2 edge.
ASU had its answer in its part of the inning when Brianna Wise lashed a pinch-hit three-run homer to pull the home team back within a pair.
The reigning Pac-12 Freshman of the Week, Kelly Martinez hit what seemed to be an insurance homer in the seventh. The solo shot gave her five round-trippers on the season and made the score, 8-5, in favor of Utah.
Three outs away from the win, Utah let it slip away. The inning started with three-straight singles for the Sun Devils and Skylar McCarty, after driving in one, scored on an error to make it a one-run game.
With two outs, Fa Leilua battled back from an 0-2 count to work a walk and on the very next pitch, Emma Ramelot hit what appeared to be her first collegiate homer, a three-run walk off shot to deep center. After a lengthy delay, interference at home plate was called and Ramelot's homer was taken away. Unfortunately for the Utes, the result stayed the same as ASU earned the dramatic win.
The Utes and Sun Devils are back at it tomorrow evening with first pitch slated for 5 p.m. MT. You can watch the game live on the Pac-12 Networks or stream it via pac-12.com/live.
