UTAH NOTES
- Utah moved up four spots to No. 10 in the latest NFCA/USA Today national rankings. This is the highest ranking of the season for the Utes. They had a bigger jump, five spots, in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll, moving to No. 11
- Utah ranks 12th nationally with a team batting average of .327. It also places 16th in scoring (6.1 runs per game) and 20th in on-base percentage (.402)
- Hannah Flippen has surpassed the 200-hit and 100-RBI plateaus for her career. She recently set a new Utah mark for runs scored during her career, previously held by Sandy Rhea (177, 1995-98).
- Flippen leads the Pac-12 with a .436 batting average, ranks third in on-base percentage (.516), fourth in slugging percentage (.745) and runs batted in (37), seventh in runs scored (32), doubles (9) and hits (48) and ninth in total bases (82)
- Anissa Urtez recently surpassed 200 hits for her career and is currently fourth in the Pac-12 with a .422 batting average.
- She also ranks 10th in the league in on-base percentage (.482) and 11th in runs batted in (34). With 40 doubles, she is one shy of moving into the top-five all-time at Utah
- Delilah Pacheco has done a fantastic job in the leadoff spot, ranking seventh in the Pac-12 in walks (19). In Pac-12 play she is 12th in runs scored (29).
- During this stretch, Bridget Castro is batting .435 to pace the team. She also ranks second in the league with three triples this season.
 - With 35 runs batted in, Heather Bowen ranks 10th in the Pac-12. She is second on the team with five home runs this year.
- Utah currently ranks 22nd in the nation with a combined team ERA of 1.80. Hailey Hilburn and Miranda Viramontes rank among the top 5 in the Pac-12 respectively
- Hilburn, used mainly in relief so far during conference play, ranks 16th nationally with a 1.14 ERA. She is also fourth among Pac-12 pitchers in hits allowed per seven innings.
- Katie Donovan has 13 wins to give her 50 for her career. She ranks seventh in the Pac-12 in strikeouts, recently surpassing 300 K's for her career, and has also notched two saves
- Defensively, Utah leads the league and ranks fifth nationally in double plays turned with 22. The Utes were second in the nation last season with 41.
- The Utes are one of seven Pac-12 teams ranked among the top 21 nationally in the RPI, moving up three spots to No. 15
MARTINEZ NAMED PAC-12 FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
Kelly Martinez was named Pac-12 Freshman of the Week on Apr. 18 for her contributions during Utah's series victory over No. 1 Arizona.
She batted .500 vs. the Wildcats, slugged .625 and had the highest on-base percentage on the team (.556). She drove in the lone run on Thursday vs. Danielle O'Toole and then started the seventh-inning game-winning rally on Saturday with a single of the left-hander
Martinez has excelled behind the plate, throwing out 10 base runners, tops in the Pac-12.Â
Over the last three weekends, she leads the team with 10 runs driven in and has a .714 slugging percentage.
LAST WEEKEND
Utah took the series from No. 1 Arizona by winning the last two games, 6-3 and 3-2. It was the first time in program history that the Utes beat the team at the top of the rankings.
Miranda Viramontes (2-0, 1.31) won a pair of games against a team that entered the weekend leading the nation in home runs and slugging percentage, as well as ranking second in the nation in scoring and batting average.
Bridget Castro was 5-for-9, Delilah Pacheco batted .400 and led the team with three runs scored and Anissa Urtez drove in three for the Utes.Â
Alyssa Barrera won Saturday's finale, delivering a two-out single that scored fellow freshman Ryley Ball. Ball was pinch-running for another newcomer, Kelly Martinez, who started the inning with a single of her own.Â
VIRAMONTES NAMED PAC-12 PITCHER OF THE WEEK (3/21)
Viramontes won two of three games as Utah swept No. 10 UCLA on its home field, (2-0, 0.64 ERA). She limited the Bruins to one run on nine hits in 11 innings, striking out six and walking none.Â
She is 12-1 with a 1.26 ERA, fifth-best in the Pac-12, and recently notched the 200th strikeout of her career. She also ranks third nationally in walks per seven innings (7 in 78 IP).
Viramontes threw a perfect game vs. CSU Bakersfield and has a propensity for winning big contests, turning in complete game victories this season over No. 13 Tennessee and No. 10 UCLA.
In last year's NCAA Tournament, she set the tone with 6 2/3 scoreless innings against Illinois, striking out six batters then had a career-high nine strikeouts in a complete game vs. No. 9 Kentucky. She also picked up her second save of the season when she closed the door on the ninth-ranked Wildcats.
A honorable mention All Pac-12 pick in 2015, she was named to the All-Freshman Team after being named Freshman of the Week once.
BARRERAÂ NAMED PAC-12 FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK (2/28)
The Chino Hills, California native led the team with four runs scored, a .438 batting average and also slugged .563 at the Mary Nutter Classic. She reached base safely in her first 13 games and opened her collegiate career with an 11-game hit streak.Â
She currently ranks third in the Pac-12 and leads the Utes with 38 runs scored and is one of the five toughest players to strikeout (5 in 115 AB's)
FLIPPEN NAMED NCAA PLAYER OF THE YEAR FINALIST
Hannah Flippen was selected as a finalist for the 2017 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award
Last season, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association named Flippen an All-American and she was also named the 2016 Pac-12 Player of the Year as well as being tabbed an Academic All-America First Team selection by CoSIDA. Prior to the start of this season, Flippen also earned a spot on the US National Team.
Arizona is the most represented university among the finalists, having five athletes making the list while Oregon has two players represented. UCLA is the only other Pac-12 school to have a member among the finalists. Â
The list will be narrowed to the Top 10 Finalists on May 10. The Top 3 Finalists will be announced May 24, while the winner of the 2017 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award will be revealed on May 30 prior to the start of the NCAA WCWS in Oklahoma City.
FLIPPEN PEGGED AS SENIOR CLASS AWARD FINALIST
Hannah Flippen was named as a finalist for the 2017 Senior CLASS Award in collegiate softball. Ten of the top NCAA softball student-athletes who excel both on and off the field were selected
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.Â
The finalists were chosen by national media from the list of 30 candidates announced earlier this month. Nationwide fan voting begins immediately to help select the winner, and fans are encouraged to submit votes online at the Senior CLASS Award website through May 9.Â
