Utes rally in seventh but Flores double wins it for UW

SALT LAKE CITY – No. 13 Utah dropped its first extra-inning contest of the season, 4-2, to No. 8 Washington in front of an electric atmosphere at Dumke Family Softball Stadium.

On a night where NFCA Hall of Famer Mona Stevens threw out the first pitch and Utah opened its brand new Alumni Room inside the stadium, the Utes and Huskies played an outstanding contest, worthy of two top-15 teams.

For a majority of the fans in attendance, it was a frustrating end to a great evening as Utah stranded 14 runners on base and went 2-for-13 with players in scoring position

Things started well for the home side when Delilah Pacheco walked and Hannah Flippen singled of Washington starter Samantha Manti. Anissa Urtez dropped a single between three UW fielders and Utah had a 1-0 lead

Taylor Van Zee doubled in the second and advanced on a passed ball with two outs. Heather Bowen was able to alertly field a bunt and fire to a covering Flippen to keep the Utes in front.

Bowen blooped a single with one out in the second and after Kelly Martinez got plunked the Utes had a pair aboard. However, in a bit of foreshadowing, a pair of groundouts ended the frame.

In her final inning of work, Miranda Viramontes allowed the first two Huskies to reach. The junior got a strikeout and some heads up play behind the dish by Martinez cut down a would-be base stealer for out number two. A foul pop to Bridget Castro silenced the rally.

The Utes put two on with two outs in the third, a pair on with one retired in the fourth and runners on the corners with two down in the fifth, but in each instance, ground balls to the left side of the infield kept the Utes from adding to their lead.

It would eventually cost them in the sixth as Ali Aguilar was plunked on an 0-2 pitch and Casey Stangel walked on four pitches. With two outs, Taylor Van Zee smoked a two-run double to center to put Washington on the board and in the lead, 2-1

Utah showed some resiliency as Kelly Martinez just missed a leadoff homer and settled for a double off the center-field wall off reliever Madi Schreyer. With two down, BreOnna Castaneda smacked a grounder up the middle that was smothered by a diving Sis Bates. Martinez gunned it toward home and just got her finger tips on the outer edge of the plate, tying the score, 2-2

Washington quickly killed any momentum the Utes had accrued by seeing the first three runners reach base and taking the lead once again on Morganne Flores' two-run double.
It was a bitter pill to swallow for Hailey Hilburn (5-1) who threw her most pitches in almost a month, 87, and gave the Utes five innings of relief

Utah had one last chance in the eighth against Taran Alvelo (27-6), yesterday's winner. Castaneda singled up the middle with two outs and Flippen hit one over the third-base bag for a double. Needing a hit to tie the contest, the Utes could not find the magic and suffered their fourth loss in the last five games.
