EUGENE, Ore. – The Utah track and field team opened post-season action at the Pac-12 Championships on Saturday in Eugene, Ore. The two-day conference championships are being held at Hayward Field.
Â
"All the way around, our kids competed really hard today and I am really proud of them for stepping up. I didn't feel like anybody was overwhelmed by the surroundings and they all stayed composed. With how big the venue is and everything going on, along with the competition, our kids competed hard and were trying to score and trying to advance," Kepler said.
Â
Junior
Grayson Murphy finished in third place in the 3000-meter steeplechase. Murphy finished with a time of 10:08.26. Freshman
Ashley Licata also competed in the steeplechase and placed 15
th with a time of 11:18.60.
Â
"Grayson was in first coming off the last barrier, but got passed in a very close race with the two Colorado girls and just beat her to the finish line. She ran a great race, led the majority of it, and tried her hardest to keep the lead. You have to give credit to the Colorado girls because they pushed her the whole race and made a move at the end. It was still a great race for Grayson nonetheless," head coach
Kyle Kepler said. "Ashley had a fall and injured her foot but she was able to finish. She showed a lot of toughness and that is great to see out of a freshman."
Â
Freshman
Ann Wingeleth competed in the long jump and finished in sixth place. Wingeleth recorded a mark of 19 feet, 2.75 inches (5.86m).
Â
"Ann was only one centimeter away from fourth place so it was a really close battle, but that is what you expect out of the Pac-12. Competition is always very close and Ann had a great showing in her first conference meet," Kepler stated.
Â
Also in the field events for Utah, sophomore
Christine Glasmann finished in eighth place in the javelin. Glasmann recorded a mark of 145 feet (44.21m).
Â
"The rain was on and off, there was some wind on and off, but Chrissy earned a place in the final. She didn't qualify for the final until her final throw of the prelims. She was the final thrower and she had to do it, and came through in the clutch," Kepler explained.
Â
Freshman
Amanda Gehrich qualified for the final in the 1500-meter run after posting a personal best time of 4:22.78 to earn ninth place in the preliminary round. Junior
Hannah McInturff finished the race in 18
th place with a time of 4:32.84.
Â
"Amanda ran a solid race and will compete in the final tomorrow. It is really exciting to see a freshman get to experience a final with the kind of competition she is against in the Pac-12 conference," said Kepler.
Â
Opening the conference meet for the Utes, Utah's 4x100 meter relay team finished in eighth place with a time of 47.44 seconds in the preliminary round. The relay team consisting of sophomore Raynee Helm, Wingeleth, junior

We had a young group here today and it is great to see everyone come out here and compete the way they did today," Kepler said.
