Utes trail from onset and lose first game
SEATTLE - No. 11 Utah Softball could not find the answers to solve No. 6 Washington this evening during the opener to their NCAA Super Regional matchup. The Utes trailed from the onset en route to a 10-4 loss.
Washington delivered an early knockout punch when the first five batters reached base against Miranda Viramontes. Casey Stangel delivered a RBI single and Morganne Flores smashed a three-run homer for a 4-0 lead.
With two down in the second, Ali Aguliar walked, Sis Bates singled and Stangel drove in her second of the night with a hit up the middle.
Utah got things going in the fourth when Hannah Flippen and Bridget Castro singled to set up Kelly Martinez. The freshman catcher mashed a ball that almost hit the UW video board in right-center field and cut the deficit to two runs.Â
The momentum was short-lived as Flores destroyed a ball to left for her second homer of the night, a grand slam, to make it 9-3.
Taylor Van Zee would add a third Washington homer in the sixth to get the home side to double digits.
The Utes did not go down quietly as they loaded the bases in the ninth and Alyssa Barrera drove in a run with a grounder to short.Â
Hailey Hilburn pitched six innings in relief, allowing six runs and walking five. Taran Alvelo allowed four runs in seven innings and picked up her 31st win of the season for the Huskies.
Game two of this series is tomorrow evening at 6 p.m. PT and will be televised live on ESPN2
