CORVALLIS, Ore. – Utah Softball dropped the second game in its series at Oregon State this afternoon, 3-1.
Â
Miranda Viramontes pitched six innings and was saddled with the loss despite not allowing any earned runs. Meanwhile, Taylor Cotton has now pitched all 14 innings in this series for OSU and limited the Utes to just three hits
Â
OSU loaded the bases in the second thanks to three singles, two that never left the infield, but grounders to
Bridget Castro and
Hannah Flippen kept the Beavers off the board
Â
After getting the one hit off Cotton yesterday,
BreOnna Castaneda put a charge into one during the fifth. It was the second homer in the last three games for the freshman and the first hit of the contest for Utah.
Â
The visitors threatened in the sixth when Urtez worked a four-pitch walk and Castro singled but Cotton induced a grounder to second that ended the inning.
Â
After Viramontes issued a pair of walks in the bottom half of the inning, the formula that had worked so well throughout the game, get ground balls to Utah's sure-handed infielders, failed the junior.
Â
An error on a routine play allowed Oregon State to tie the game and with two outs, a slapper to short by Shelby Weeks would score a pair to push the Beavers in front, 3-1
Â
Utah tried to create some magic in the seventh as Castaneda and
Delilah Pacheco worked walks but Cotton was able to secure the victory. The Utes finished 1-for-11 with runners on base and 0-for-4 with players in scoring position.
Â
The finale between the two teams is scheduled for noon MT tomorrow
