OGDEN, Utah - Utah Soccer put forth a positive preseason display during a 3-0 win at Weber State this evening. Three players, returning from injuries, all netted for the Utes.
"We have been focusing a lot on our defense during this preseason and I think we saw it working well tonight in keeping the shutout," head coach
Rich Manning said. "I think we were not as fluid as we would like to be offensively and I'd like to push the pace a little more but I can't complain about the three goals we got. They were all well struck and it was nice to get those players on the scoresheet."
It was a great evening for the Utes, not just because of the final outcome, but because of the players who found the back of the net.
Madi Clarkson, who missed all of 2015 and fought through injuries last season, started the scoring.
Paola van der Veen sparkled with a goal and assist after suffering a setback that ended her last year prematurely and
Natalie Kump closed the game with a fine strike after medically redshirting as a freshman in 2016.
Utah dominated play from the onset with six different players testing the Weber State goalkeeper before opening the scoring. With five minutes until intermission, Utah earned a corner kick which would be taken by Van der Veen. The Dutch junior found the head of Clarkson at the back post and the Utes had a 1-0 lead.
"It was amazing," Clarkson added when asked about how it felt to score. "I was just so excited that I did not know whether to cry or celebrate. I was just so happy to get on the end of the delivery and hit it home."
Two minutes into the second stanza, Van der Veen did the honors herself. She took the ball in the opposition's half and with some fancy footwork slid the ball past the keeper to double Utah's advantage.
With one minute left in regulation, Utah added its third when Kump fired home for a 3-0 scoreline. Freshman
SaraJean Edwards got the shutout in goal, facing just two shots thanks to solid defensive play.
Utah's home opener is next Sunday at noon vs. South Dakota State. The game will be televised by the Pac-12 Networks. Season ticket scarves are now on sale for just $5 at
