SALT LAKE CITY - A pair of goals in the first two minutes of the game lifted Utah Soccer past Utah State this evening, 2-0.
Natalie Vukic scored within the first minute and
Tatum Thornton added a goal just a few seconds later.
"I just wanted to attack the area so when I saw I had a lot of space on the left I was able to drive at goal," Vukic said. "We always try and come out with an aggressive mindset, especially after the way we started last game, so we wanted to make an early impact."
The goal for Vukic put the senior in double figures for her career and staked the Utes to a quick 1-0 edge.
Janie Kearl and
Natalee Wells notched assists on the play.
Almost immediately, the Utes stuck again through Thornton, who was set up nicely by
Haylee Cacciacarne. For Thornton, a defender starting her second game, it was her first collegiate goal and killed off the Aggies hopes early in the contest.
"What a great night for soccer at Ute Field," head coach
Rich Manning said. "It was a fantastic atmosphere with such high quality on the field. Clearly, getting two goals in two minutes was a very good start. We played with good energy all night."
Carly Nelson picked up her first shutout of the season, making a pair of saves. It was the fourth shutout of her career as Utah improved to 9-1-0 all-time vs. the Aggies in Salt Lake City.
"Utah State settled in and really competed all night, so credit to them," Manning added. "We solved some things and I was pleased with our effort. We have a few things to work on to get ready for Sunday. Finally, I just want to thank all the folks that came out to cheer us on. It was fun for our players to have that support. We are looking forward to another chance to get better."
