SALT LAKE CITY—A lot has been happening with the Utah gymnastics program since the 2017 Pac-12 champion Utes were last seen competing in the NCAA Super Six back in April.
The Red Rocks recently returned from the program's fifth-annual Park City life skills retreat, which featured a leadership seminar, team goal setting and a cooking competition. Renowned speaker and author Jeff Janssen flew in for the retreat to conduct the leadership seminar. Teams visited by Janssen have combined for 30 NCAA Championships, numerous basketball Final Fours, dozens of conference championships and several top-10 Director's Cup finishes across a variety of sports.
Coinciding with Janssen's seminar at the retreat,
Maddy Stover,
Tiffani Lewis and
Kari Lee were appointed to the 2017-18 Leadership Council. Stover and Lewis are preparing for their senior season, while Lee is a junior in eligibility.
At the alpine getaway, Red Rocks also coordinated their own student-led discussion sessions, during which they outlined their vision and goals for the 2018 season.
Put a bunch of national-caliber gymnasts in a room together and a competition is sure to break out. During the life skills segment of the retreat, the Utes squared off against each other in a chopped-style cooking competition. Each gymnast was assigned four ingredients. They shopped for the ingredients, developed a recipe and were given a time limit to prepare a meal.
All 13 gymnasts attended the retreat at the rustic Silver Star Resort, including returners Stover, Lewis, Lee,
Shannon McNatt, MaKenna Merrill-Giles,
Erika Muhaw,
Missy Reinstadtler,
Macey Roberts,
Sabrina Schwab,
MyKayla Skinner and
Kim Tessen, as well as freshmen Alexia Burch and Sydney Soloski.
Coaches
Megan Marsden,
Tom Farden,
Robert Ladanyi and
Carly Dockendorf were also present, along with staff members
Jennifer White and
Dakota Marsden.
A few days prior to the retreat, the Red Rocks elicited loud cheers from a packed house at Rice-Eccles Stadium, where they were recognized for their 2017 Pac-12 Championship at the football team's season opener. Earlier that day, Utah Director of Athletics
Dr. Chris Hill presented the gymnasts with their 2017 Pac-12 Championship rings.
Now the gymnasts are looking ahead to their photoshoot, which will take place at the end of September. The event, which jumpstarts the Red Rocks' unique branding each year, will take place at the Bonneville Salt Flats for the first time.
In addition to the activities the Utes have been enjoying outside of the gym, they are also benefitting from improvements to the Dumke Gymnastics Center during their voluntary training. Over the summer, new LED lights and electric blinds were installed and the team is training on new AAI matting, beams and pit foam.
The Pac-12 Conference office anticipates releasing the 2018 gymnastics schedule by late September. One date set in stone is the 2018 NCAA Regional, which will be hosted by Utah on Saturday, Apr. 7.
The Sept. 15 deadline for season ticket renewals is rapidly approaching. Starting on Sept. 16, seats will be released for sale to the general public. Upper bowl reserved tickets are already on sale for as low as $30 by calling 801-581- UTIX or visiting
