Twenty total selected for All-Academic honors
SAN FRANCISCO – Utah placed six players on the 2018 Pac-12 Football All-Academic first and second teams and another 14 earned honorable mention acclaim. A trio of Ute sophomores made the first team in wide receiver Britain Covey, defensive end Nick Heninger and defensive back Jaylon Johnson. Earning second-team honors were junior defensive back Terrell Burgess, senior punter Mitch Wishnowsky and sophomore Connor Haller on special teams.
Â
Heninger, Burgess, Wishnowsky and Haller are making their second appearance on the Pac-12 All-Academic teams. Heninger, Burgess and Wishnowsky were first-team selections in 2017 with Haller making the second team.
Â
To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade point average and appear in at least 50-percent of his team's games. Redshirt freshmen are eligible but true freshmen are not.
Â
Covey, who is also a first-team CoSIDA Academic All-District selection, carries a 3.85 cumulative GPA in business, while Heninger has a 3.73 GPA in business administration and Johnson has a 3.62 GPA in business. On the second team, Burgess has a 3.29 GPA in kinesiology, Wishnowsky a 3.53 in kinesiology and physical education teaching and Haller a 3.73 in business administration.
Â
Earning honorable mention honors were senior offensive lineman Jordan Agasiva, senior defensive back Marquise Blair, redshirt freshman offensive lineman Nick Ford, sophomore defensive back Javelin Guidry, junior quarterback Tyler Huntley, junior tight end Jake Jackson, junior defensive back Josh Nurse, junior offensive lineman Darrin Paulo, junior defensive lineman John Penisini, sophomore defensive lineman Hauati Pututau, redshirt freshman quarterback Jason Shelley, junior wide receiver Demari Simpkins, redshirt freshman defensive end Mika Tafua and junior running back Mason Woodward.
Â
Paulo is a three-time honoree, which includes second team honors last year, while Simpkins was also a second-team selection last season. Huntley and Jackson both earn their second-straight honorable mention honor.
Â
Honorable mention recipients were not limited to one per position, as was the case with the first and second teams.Â
