SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah Runnin' Utes fell 74-59 to the BYU Cougars in the Beehive Classic Saturday afternoon at Vivint Smart Home Arena.
Sedrick Barefield led Utah with 16 points,
Timmy Allen had 10 points and
Donnie Tillman chipped in with 10 points. BYU's Yoeli Childs paced the Cougars with a game-high 31 points and 11 rebounds. The loss dropped Utah back to .500 on the season at 4-4 overall, while BYU moved to 7-4 with the win.
The first half was a back-and-forth battle that saw five ties and eight different lead changes before BYU went into the break with a 32-28 lead. Both teams were held under 40 percent shooting overall as Utah tallied a .385 percentage and BYU shot .370 overall. The Utes poured in two more three-pointers (5-3) than BYU, but the Cougars were a perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line and Utah was just 3-for-5. BYU out-rebounded the Utes 21-12 in the first half, as well.
BYU's Yoeli Childs led all players at the break with 15 points. He scored BYU's first 12 points of the game, but was limited to just three points over the final 12 minutes of the period. Barefield paced the Utes with nine points, while
Riley Battin and Allen both scored six points through the first 20 minutes.
BYU opened the second half with a 13-0 run and would push its lead to 17 points – its largest at that point in the point in the game – up 45-28. Utah would outscore the Cougars 10-3 over the next 5:30 to get it back within 10, and later pulled back to within eight points, down 54-46 following a three-pointer from Barefield. But, BYU pulled away down the stretch eventually getting it back to a 17-point lead, up 68-51 with 3:44 left to play and later pushing its lead to 20 points, up 72-52, with just a little over two minutes to play. Three pointers from Allen and
Beau Rydalch late in the game would conclude in the Utes falling by 15 points in the end.
After shooting just 37 percent in the first half, BYU turned around to shoot .567 (17-30) in final 20 minutes of play. Utah was limited to just a .346 (9-26) shooting effort in the second period. The Utes made five three-pointers in the second half, but were held to just four two-point plays in the half.
BYU finished the game going 13-for-14 from the free throw line, while Utah tallied an 11-for-17 effort overall. BYU won the battle of the boards, pulling down 40 rebounds and limiting Utah to just 28 rebounds overall. Utah outscored the Cougars, 19-15, in points off turnovers, but BYU countered with a 14-7 discrepancy in second-chance points.
The Utes return to action next weekend with a road game against the Kentucky Wildcats. Utah and Kentucky will tip-off next Saturday, Dec. 15, at 5 p.m. ET at Rupp Arena in Lexington, Ky.
