SALT LAKE CITY—The No. 4 ranked Utah gymnasts will take a break from competition this week before returning to action against No. 7 Michigan in Ann Arbor on Mar. 10. It is just the 11th regular-season bye in the 43-year history of Utah gymnastics and the Utes' first since 2012.
Â
"Although regular-season byes are rare, this one comes at a good time for us," said co-head coach
Tom Farden. "We've utilized four all-arounders in several meets, as well as several multiple event athletes, and they will benefit from a week of no competition landings. We'll take two days off and our training will be focused on strength and fine tuning."
Â
Utah is No. 4 in the national rankings for the second straight week even as the determination moved from total season average to Regional Qualifying Score (RQS) on Feb. 26. This week's top five are Oklahoma (197.855 RQS), UCLA (197.610), LSU (197.545), Utah (197.415) and Florida (197.250). The RQS is calculated by taking a team's or individual's six best regular-season-meet scores—three of which must be on the road—eliminating the high score and averaging the remaining five.
Â
The Utes' best event rankings are on No. 2 floor (49.485) and No. 3 on vault (49.395). Utah is No. 5 on beam (49.275) and No. 6 on bars (49.295).
Â
Individually,
MyKayla Skinner is tied for third in the nation in the all-around with a 39.600 RQS, tied for No. 2 on vault (9.925), No. 3 on floor (9.930) and No. 10 on bars (9.905).
MaKenna Merrell-Giles is tied for sixth in the all-around (39.535), No. 3 on floor (9.930) and No. 9 on vault (9.895).
Â
Skinner expects to return to the all-around lineup at Michigan on Mar. 10 after competing on just two events in Utah's 197.500-197.450 loss at Cal on Feb. 25. Skinner, who tweaked her ankle in Utah's win at No. 2 UCLA on Feb. 18, was held out of vault and floor (where she ranks No. 2 and 3 in the country) vs. Cal as a precautionary measure. It marked the first time in her career that she did not compete in the all-around.
Â
Merrell-Giles is the only Ute to compete all-around in every meet and has a 39.675 all-around best. She is one of four Utes to post a 39.500 or better in the all-around this season, along with
Skinner (39.725 high),
Kari Lee (39.500) and
Missy Reinstadtler (39.500).
Â
Utah's meet at Michigan on Saturday, Mar. 10 will start at 2 p.m. ET/noon MT and will be televised on the Big Ten Network.
