TUCSON, Ariz. – Utah Softball had its seven-game winning streak snapped this evening in its Pac-12 opener at No. 9 Arizona, 4-1.
The Utes mustered just three hits against UA pitcher Taylor McQuillan, who improved to 15-1 with a 0.78 ERA.
Katie Donovan matched her pitch-for-pitch except for one vital play, Jessie Harper's tie-breaking home run in the fifth inning.
Donovan worked out of an early jam before Utah took the lead in the top of the third.
Julia Noskin walked with one out and
Alyssa Barrera collected the team's first hit of the game, a single to left.
BreOnna Castaneda was hit with a pitch and
Heather Bowen won her battle with a sac fly to right for a 1-0 advantage.
Arizona quickly equalized when Alyssa Palamino started the bottom half of the frame with a double. She was lifted for a pinch runner, who took third on a wild pitch and scored on a Reyna Carranco ground out.
In the fifth, Palamino worked a two-out walk and Carranco smacked an 0-2 pitch up the middle for a single. Harper hammered the first ball she saw to left and it crept over the wall as UA took the lead.
Utah had a chance to get some runs back in the sixth when
Heather Bowen started it off with a double.
Hailey Hilburn singled to put runners on the corners with one out but a grounder to short and pop up ended the threat.
Hilburn took over for Donovan in the circle and kept Utah in the game by working out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth. However, the Ute bats went silent in the seventh.
The two teams are back in action tomorrow night at 8 p.m. MT on the Pac-12 Networks.
