SALT LAKE CITY - Utah dropped the annual Deseret First Duel this evening to BYU, 5-2.
Ryley Ball hit her first collegiate homer but the Utes went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position, quelling a handful of rallies.
Kerisa Viramontes earned her 13
th win of the season and Autumn Moffat notched her first save with three scoreless innings of relief.
Hailey Hilburn suffered the loss and fell to 5-4 on the year.
BYU loaded the bases to start the game against Hilburn and took the lead on a wild pitch. Bridget Fleener followed with a single up the middle to tack on another run.
Utah had a chance to make an immediate impact at the plate when
Julia Noskin worked a four-pitch walk and
Kelly Martinez singled with two outs. However, BYU got a strikeout to end the inning.
The Cougars threatened in the third by loading the bases with two outs but Hilburn alertly corralled a come-backer to end the inning.
BYU did break through again in the fourth. A bunt, error and wild pitch set up Libby Sugg for a RBI single and the freshman Fleener continued her solid evening with a two-run double to right for a 5-0 lead.
Utah had something going in the fourth when Martinez walked with one out and Hilburn singled to left.
BreOnna Castaneda then smacked a run-scoring double to center to open its scoring.
In the fifth, Ball, the lone Utah native on the Ute roster, blasted a pitch out of the park. Her first round-tripper seemed to provide the team with a short-lived spark.
The home team had a chance to get closer in the sixth when Hilburn and Castaneda singled to start the inning. However, Moffatt struck out the side to keep the Utes in check.
Utah is back in Pac-12 play this Friday when it starts a three-game series at Cal. The first contest is scheduled for 3 p.m. PT in Berkeley.
