BERKELEY, Calif. – Utah Softball was swept for the fourth time in five Pac-12 series after a 3-1 loss at Cal.
It capped a frustrating three games for the Utes, who hit just .127 for the weekend (9-for-71). Utah was also 2-for-24 with runners on base against the Golden Bears
For the third game in a row, Utah started aggressively as
Julia Noskin singled and stole second but Kamalani Dung struck out the next two batters and induced a pop up to end the first. The freshman left fielder for the Utes batted .500 for the weekend out of the leadoff spot, reaching base five times.
Utah broke through in the third when
Ryley Ball worked a walk with one out before stealing second and moving to third on a ground ball.
Heather Bowen doubled to right center for a 1-0 lead. The senior drove in all four runs this weekend for Utah and even played shortstop today after starting all season at third base.
Cal started the bottom half with a pair of infield hits off
Katie Donovan and after a strikeout, an error allowed the Golden Bears to tie the game. A passed ball put them in front and Kobie Pettis followed with a RBI single for a 3-1 lead.
The Utes put runners on base in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings but never got them into scoring position. Meanwhile,
Miranda Viramontes was shutting Cal down in relief, holding them to just one hit over the final 3 2/3 innings, whiffing six batters. Â
The senior finished with 14 strikeouts in eight innings pitched and limited Cal batters to a .138 average in two contests this weekend.
Utah starts a series with No. 8 Arizona State on Friday at 5 p.m. Admission at Dumke Family Softball Stadium is free for all spectators.
