SALT LAKE CITY – Utah endured a difficult evening in the opener with No. 9 Arizona State, falling by a score of 12-0.
Â
G Juarez notched her 11th shutout of the season, earning her 20th win of the season in the process. She struck out eight batters, including five of the final seven Utes. Utah mustered just three hits for the contest.
ASU started the scoring in the second inning as Morgan Howe singled, moved to second on a bunt and came home on a DeNae Chatman single. Another single and walk loaded the bases for leadoff hitter Kindra Hackbarth, who connected for a well-placed bases-clearing triple that rolled all the way to the wall in left-center field.
Ahead 4-0, the Sun Devils tacked on two more in the fourth. A single and error put a pair of runners on and after a wild pitch created an opening at first base, Utah issued a free pass to ASU's best hitter Danielle Gibson. The plan backfired as Howe managed to leg out a ground ball to short for an infield single that kept the inning going. The next batter was hit a by a pitch, playing another run.
The Sun Devils poured it on in the fifth. A pair of walks and bunt single loaded the bases before Gibson smacked a three-run double to right center. Howe added a RBI single and Chatman smacked a two-run double to close the scoring.
Tomorrow's second game of the series starts at 2 p.m. It will be Girl Scout Day at Dumke Family Softball Stadium with various arts and crafts scheduled. Admission is free to all entrants.
