PROVO, Utah  - No. 24 Utah took on No. 1 BYU in the Deseret First Duel and the Cougars got the best of the Utes in front of the largest crowd ever at Smith Fieldhouse in Provo, Utah.
Â
"I think it was an excellent experience for us tonight minus losing," head coach
Beth Launiere said about playing in that kind of environment with her young team. "My young players have to go through these matches. We're going to get better. We have a lot of young talent on the floor, but were just a little too young to handle something like that tonight. Just watching them tonight, they identified things they need to get better at and they're hungry."

Sophomore
Dani Drews led the team with 11 kills, while also having two service aces and two blocks.
Â
The Utes jumped out to an early 4-1 lead in the first set after a couple of service aces. Utah held that lead all the way through 14-11, but then BYU went on a run to tie the match. Once the Cougars had the momentum, they built a small lead and didn't let Utah get back in the set. BYU closed out the first to take an early lead, 25-20.
Â
BYU came out in the second set and grabbed the lead and Utah couldn't recover. Drews had four kills in the set, but the Cougars still went up 2-0 in the match.
Â
Despite trailing 2-0 in the match in front of 5,472 people, Utah came out and battled in the third set. The teams traded points until it was tied at nine and BYU went on a 5-0 run. The Utes got back within three after that, but the Cougars proved to be too strong, closing out the match in three sets.
Â
This marked the 12
th time that Utah played the number one team in the country.
Â
The Utes will be back on their home floor in the Huntsman Center on Friday, September 14. First serve is at 7 p.m. against Utah Valley. That will be Utah's final non-conference match of the season before turning their attention to Pac-12 play.
