Three Finish on Podium as Skiing Stands Second at CU Invite

ELDORA, Colo. – The Utah ski team is in second place after the first day of the Colorado Invitational as Mark Engel, Eirin Engeset and Roni Remme all finished on the podium in the men's and women's giant slalom races.
Engeset earned her second-straight podium finish in the women's race while Roni Remme, who did not compete yesterday after traveling back to the U.S. after competing in the World Cup, finished third in her first race of the season. Engeset had the second-fastest first run while Remme jumped from six to third after running the fastest second run. Katie Vesterstein did not finish her first run while Julie Mohagen did not finish her second run.
In addition to Engel, who finished on the podium for the second-straight day with a second-place finish in the men's race, the Utes had a race-high three skiers in the top 10. Joachim Bakken Lien placed fifth for his first career top five finish while Huston Philp placed ninth for the second-straight day for his seventh career top 10 finish. Philp ran the fourth-fastest first run. The trio scored 88 points for the Utes, narrowly trailing Denver.
Also in the men's race, Fredrik Maurstad made his first appearance as a Ute with a 15th-place finish while Linus Walch placed 18th with Ty Sprock 19th. Tomas Birkner De Miguel finished 29th. Addison Dvoracek did not finish his first run while Martin Grasic did not finish his second run.
Utah stands 10 points behind meet leader Denver after day one, trailing the Pioneers 169 to 159. Montana State stands third with 130 points with New Mexico fourth (126) and Colorado fifth (119).
The alpine teams continue tomorrow with the men's and women's slalom races. In the evening, there will be an exhibition dual slalom event that does not count towards any team scores.
