SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah ski team had a strong first weekend in Colorado and heads to Montana this weekend for the Montana State Invitational.
First on the schedule is an RMISA giant slalom qualifier at Bridger Bowl Ski Area on Wednesday, Jan. 16. The RMISA giant slalom qualifier does not count towards any team scoring and is used as an extra opportunity for skiers to earn qualification points for the NCAA Championships at the end of the season.
The Montana State Invitational begins on Thursday, Jan. 17, with the giant slalom races, followed by the slalom races on Friday, Jan. 18. The Nordic teams begin on Friday with the 5- and 10-km freestyle races, followed by the 15- and 20-km classic races on Saturday, Jan. 19. The cross country races will be held at Crosscut Mountain Sports Center.
Also on Saturday, the men's slalom race of the Colorado Invitational, which was postponed due to heavy snow, will be held. The Utes lead that meet by 85 points over Denver, 602 to 517, with one race remaining.
Through nine races this season between alpine and Nordic, the Utes have three wins (two by
Guro Jordheim in women's Nordic), with 12 podium finishes.
The Utes strongest group has been the women's Nordic team, scoring 190 points in their first two races. In addition to Jordheim's two wins (giving her nine for her career),
Karianne Moe earned her first career podium finish and finished both races in the top 10 last week.
Mariah Bredal earned a career-best fifth in the classic race and also placed in the top 10 in both races.
Leah Lange also had a top 10 finish in the classic race with a sixth-place run.
Julia Richter struggled with illness last weekend but hopes to return strong next week.
In men's Nordic,
Logan Diekmann had the best finishes of his career with two podium finishes last weekend.
Ola Jordheim had a pair of top five finishes in his collegiate debut and
Maximilian Bie was also strong in his first career races with an eighth-place finish in the classic.
Jacob Engström also skis for the Utes.
Bjørn Riksaasen did not compete due to illness.
Noel Keeffe is preparing for the FIS Nordic Junior World Ski Championships, he leaves on Monday, Jan. 14, for Finland, with competition beginning on Jan. 20.
In women's alpine,
Roni Remme returned from competing in World Cup to win the slalom and place third in the giant slalom last weekend. She has three career wins and eight career podiums. In her first season,
Eirin Engeset has also been strong with a pair of second-place finishes and placing in the top six in every race.
Julie Mohagen,
Katie Vesterstein and
Katie Parker also skied last weekend for Utah.
Addison Dvoracek won his third career race in the CU men's giant slalom last weekend, his first as a Ute after transferring from Montana State.
Mark Engel, who has also made World Cup starts this year, finished on the podium in both races last weekend.
Huston Philp placed ninth in both races while
Joachim Bakken Lien also earned two top 10 finishes with a fifth-place run in the CU giant slalom.
Ty Sprock earned a pair of top 20 finishes, while
Linus Walch and
Fredrik Maurstad also placed in the top 20 in the CU giant slalom.
Dominic Demschar and
Martin Grasic also competed.
